Choice of oil for new turbos........??
Thursday, May 25, 2006 5:01 PM
Well me and buddy are both wondering what you guys would say the best oil for a new turbo would be?

as well i have been blowing smoke out the exhaust since the turbo was put on (bought it new) and i now it is even worse.... like LOTS of smoke and i am wondering if my turbo seals are blown... and i have been told there might be to much oil pressure going into the turbo but the Garrett turbo on the gnx we have sees about 90+psi into the turbo... as well with the oil to use with a new turbo, we just used the regular 5w30 mobil 1 syn. right off and never had a problem in 3 years and still havent... but yet on my sunfire im geting HUGE amount of smoke coming out of my exhaust now...

as, i am the buddy he was talking about i might aswell add sum things, I currently have the needle valve set up witha gauge, when i first used the turbo i used a 5W30 SYN, and was running 30 psi cold and almost near 0 when hot......it worked fine for a month mayb and then blew smoke.....SO i switched to a 15W50 mobil 1 syn and helped abit.....but i think the PCV problem added to it, and the thick ass oil didnt help draining.......and so i fixed the breathing problem.........

DO you guys recommend doing a thicker oil TO PRIME the seals and then slow down to a 10w30 oil for regular use after the turbo has seen sum oil...SInce iv just had my turbo rebuilt i just want to clarify what everyone else was running...FOR pressures etc...

So please post your Oil, Weight, and how long youv been using it..AND what motor..this is for the 2.4L if anyone is confused...ANd the Pressures Hot and Cold..

and post if you have taken care of the Breathing of the engine with the air oil seperator too....thats a determinating factor.....

Thanx guys

Mobil 1 5w30

And I use the oil restrictor from ATP Turbo. I rebuilt the turbo with brand new seals and I have yet to see it smoke.

Yeah, I have also heard of a few people blowing the seals out in the garrett turbo's from too much oil pressure. But if you did blow a seal then the damage is done and it won't help by simply lowering the pressure.
