is it one or the other? does megasquirt do the job of a FMU? i was planning on running megasquirt to run everything but after doing some research a programmable MSD DIS-2 seems like it will be much much easier to control timing and spark, while an FMU will be easier than using MS?
i went and got myself all confused over what to do now.

from what you just said. use an fmu it will save you headaches.

that is what i thought. man i don't know why i didn't figure that out before i went and bought a MS system. oh well. at least they sell freaking good and stuff.
what are the advantages to using an MS system if using MSD and an FMU are easier?
argh. just when i think i know what's going on i go and fry my brain and waste money!

Way more control and way more features is what the advantages are. sure the msd can control the ignition, but it is just altering the signals from the pcm, the ms you tell it what advance you want for given map/rpm readings and tune it for best power. the fmu just increases fuel pressure at a certain ratio to boost pressure but does nothing to injector pulse width, ms you control the pulse width and set it to what you need.
hp tuners?

I'm surprised you show up to our meets after half of the things you say on here.
i would love to do hp tuners but i got a '96 2.2. no love for me.
so should i stick with using the MS then? will it do timing retard and stuff like that?

if you're asking these types of questions, you are NOWHERE near ready to build, install, or tune a MegaSquirt system. Spend about a month on the MS forums, and maybe you'll have a start. I'm a believer in MS, but it is not for newbs by any standard, if you have to ask us what it does, then you're not prepared to be using it. There is more info on their site and in their forums than anyone could ever really ask for, and if theres something specific to running it on a j-body that you need help with there are at least a few on here that can help out. Just make sure you do the bulk of the research first. I'm still learning about the damn thing and I haven't even ordered mine yet.

yeah i know what your saying for sure. i thought i understood and then went and got myself confused. it suddenly snapped in my head though.
instead of just forcing more pressure/fuel into the rail like an FMU, the MS will alter how long/often the injectors can fire. that is why the fpr is considered a band-aid.
yeah up to this point i spend almost all my time learning about building the engine and making it strong.
now i think part of my problem is i'm not sure if i want to practice with the old engine with tuning and the such and save the built engine for when i have more practice or just drop the built engine in (after i get it built, just waiting on the pistons and stuff now) and try and tune it that way.
i would have probably waited to order it but i came across a great price package so i went ahead and ordered the thing.

next to HPT, Ms is probably the best bang for your buck engine mangement system. Running it does it kind of complicated, specially if you know nothing about it. I suggest reading
http://www.megasquirt.info at least 3 times
until you understand what it does, if you already have the system, start learning and run it..its capable of way more then a FMU and a DIS-2, the functions are great
Swap a newer computer in???????????? then hp tuners. much easier then wiring in MS and youll have factory like control.
Ill give you this thow, you have a motor that is uber easy to work on. so if you ever do get your ish straight your already one step ahead of the game. I cant tell you how many ohv parts are on my GD eco.

yeah i know what you mean. the engine is really nice to work with/on. the only thing that really sucks is freaking the topfeed conversion i need to do.

This sould not take longer than an afternoon.

if your stocker is running strong just start with that.
Sean did you get a pre assembled MS?
Reading the MSefi forums will alot.
You will be needing a wideband to tune if you don't already have one.
ohv power!
oh yeah. i've been reading all the megasquirt pages like crazy. there is so freaking much info. i have learned alot just not to sure if i have absorbed certain points completely.
i actually bought a package with assembled ms 2 v 3, relay board, wire harness, coolant sensor, and some other random parts.
for the wideband should i buy a lc-1, lm-1, or just hte gauge with wideband sensor so i can see where the a/f ratio is and and tune according to that?

mabye if you have all the parts. but there is so much custom work that has to be done I severly doubt youll bet it done in one afternoon. examp. second clt, second IAT. is your tach readable. do you have your code set. and dont get me started on running a clean wire setup.
now if you talk to someone thats already got it to work, and you start with all the parts you need, then mabye.

I did have all the parts there, thats how long it took me to wire it up and get it running.
For the extra clt sensor,my thermo-stat housing was already taped for it
there is only 11 or 12 wires that have to be hooked up and a map hose ,it does not take long when you know whats going on.
Maybe I just lucked out?
no its really not that hard to wire it all up, it can easily be done within an afternoon...
most people do wait to have all the parts to put in before they start the install. just seems easier to me.
If anyone is looking to buy a new M Setup I got one for sale.
HEY it's my thread! none of that in here!! j/k
anyways, but seriously for the wideband sensor what all do i really need to buy for that?
should i buy a lc-1, lm-1, or just the gauge with wideband sensor so i can see where the a/f ratio is and and tune according to that?
i don't want to spend more than i really have to on that and have stuff sitting around.
http://www.helpelijah.com
i'm using a zeitronix wideband, i like it. lots of features, but i want an innovate probably the lc-1, just really haven't looked into them since i am borrowing my buddies
Aren't B&G coming out with a MS-style wideband system?

better a delay than a disaster.
yeah, but who knows how long it will take before it comes out
jay- how much do you want to sell it for and is it the complete setup with everything
