looking for some help buying a turbo

hello, im sure this is an annoying question you frequents in here see alot...i apoligize-i read the faq's-they didnt seem to help me much.

i am planning on purchasing a turbo kit within the next year....i want to spend about $4500 to get exactly what i want. i have a 98 z24 auto. i only want to have about 6-7 psi, engine has used pistion/rods, new crank and new bearings. i always liked what i seen with johhny mack's turbo-headers and various parts...but i cannot seem to find a website for him any more, i know id rather just buy a complete bolt on kit so all i gotta do is bolt it on and go, dont really want to fab up anything-except for maybe some sort of bigger fuel mods etc and i am planning on getting a custom JBP reflash to help with the computing.

WHAT I WANT-
turbo HEADER (really would like johhny mack's)
turbo capable of 8 psi-and polished look
charge piping HAS to be made for the 2.4 intake manifold-i dont like the HO much.
polished or chromed charge piping
a very LOUD BOV-i have no clue which one would be the loudest

its a show car, i want it to go kinda fast and look good doing it, it doesnt need 500hp

www.itsturbo.net had nothing pertaining to a 2.4l twin cam turbo kit that i could find.
www.speed-craft.com doesnt even exsist
ive heard bad things about exploited's stuff taking decades to get.
www.cavalierconnection.com was acctually very helpful, and might be what i end up going with

thanks in advance for your help, and again-sorry for being a newbie

J-Mack does not produce kits or manifolds for J's anymore, there are very few floating out there so I'm sure you aren't going to get one. The only way right now to get a header style manifold for the 2.4's is to have one made custom.

Pick any turbo and polish it yourself, would be a shame to rule out a great turbo because its not shiney.

Make your own charge piping, there are no universal kits out there, it changes with each setup unless you buy a complete kit. Have it chromed or polished after you fab it up.

TurboXS (Turbosmart) RFL

You can order Exploiteds stuff COD so you aren't out any cash. Cav Connection are great guys, if you get a full kit out of the box, get it from them.

ok...i thought about the whole chrome charge piping after i posted, and yeah..i can just get them done at the chrome shop i have all my stuff done at now.

what does RFL stand for?

that really sucks about the no johhny mack turbo header

anyone know if the cav connection kit meets most of my demands of a kit?

if i do get the cav connection kit...can i change the BOV to the turboXS one without modification?

thanks for the help

Unfortunatly, my car was the last one to get one of the J-Mack 321 stainless headers, but the shop that constructed them to his specs is still around. It is www.CustomTubes.com. Ask for Willy. He may have some ideas for you.

Or you could PM me with any questions you may have for John. (reasonable questions only) I am still in contact with him occasionally...

But with that custom built header comes a pretty steep price - just make sure your sitting down when you ask how much!!

i like you attitude with this, yea some would think its ricey, but you dont plan on having a 500 hp show car (like most people want and never get)

as for the bov, ive never seen a good working rfl, ive seen 3 of them leak and none of them work. that and they are ugly HUGE bov's.
i like hks ssqv, pretty loud and it makes a "different" noise compared to most bov's they kinda flutter.

and the only other bov i would use is the tial, pretty loud and nice sounding as well.

lol...well i was expecting to pay $1000-1200 for the turbo header...but im in love with the damn thing so whatever it takes i spose. im planning on spending $3500 to get the cavconnection kit, but i could pay more to get the turbo header and pry just sell the cavconnection manfiold.

i was reading on here somewhere that a turbo header wont work on an auto tranny...is that true?

does anyone know what turbo comes with the CC kit? anyone know if it'll work with a JMTS header?

That's funny, mine doesn't leak, and it works pretty f'n good. But that's my 2 cents.
I also only paid $100 brand new, and the Blitz I had just wasn't loud/cool sounding enough for me. However, it is kinda ugly

If you're referring to the RFL BOV, I know lots of people thatt run them on cars producing very good numbers @ a high PSI. WRX's and EVO's use them all the time, and they run 13-15 psi stock. I know the WRX has a plate mounted BOV to their top mount intercooler which eliminates the rfl's o-ring universal style hook-up, but the owner of Adrenaline Motorsports here in town has a full front mount with a universal RFL on his piping just like mine. He's holding over 25 psi with out leaks

In regards to the header not fitting comment - My Ecotec is proof that it does work with an auto - When we were building / fitting the JMTS 2.4 kits, I noticed that I had more room to fit the turbo and header and external wastegate. It can and will work if built with the auto transmission size in mind during the build plan. I hope your hands are skinny or you have a friend that knows how to turn wrenches that has skinny fingers... your gonna need em with this header.

Not sure about what turbo is used with the CC kit. The brand/ type of turbo I am using is an Innovative T3/T04e. It spools up very easily due to the header. Sounds like a mack truck hauling down the highway . It turns heads almost as much as Hugh Heffners three girlfriends hahahaha...

The standard 4 bolt T4 flange was used on the header and it was unthreaded so bolts and nuts are necessary - they are a tight squeeze to get at them but can be tightened with enough ingenuity...

If you need any more info, feel free to ask.

I've seen an ebay knockoff rfl on a 400 hp teggy, I could only imagine that the real thing is just as good. With a lil wear and tear, what doesn't leak?

rfl = ? c'mon, use your imagination, they say its the loudest....

not fond of the HOs? I'm tellin you now, its the best/cheapest investment for any 2.4, forced induction or not. Plus, when you have people who are j-body enthusiasts comin to look at your car, it definately gives it that extra flair. Plus, it looks better and its NOT PLASTIC!
