Turbo 2.4 problem
Friday, May 12, 2006 7:55 PM
So i finally finshed the last few things on the car today. It's been sitting for a few months and I havent had a lot of time to work on it so it took me longer than i figured.

This is a 99 2.4 and the basics consists of:

T3 turbo
2.5" charge pipes
JRC 6" front mount
HO manifold with phenolic spacer and 2.4 TB
3" turbo back exhaust

For the fuel setup i have 4 extra injectors in the HO manifold that are controlled by a Greddy Rebic III injector controller. The fuel feed line is T'd off and feeds a fuel block that in turn feed the extra injectors. So the stock injectors and FPR are in place and unchanged.

Here's the problem I ran into. I started the car the first time and it started right up and idled fine, no vacuum leaks anywhere. I let it idle for a little while and then started just lightly bringing the revs up. When I pressed on the gas pedal just ever so slightly, it rev'd a little which is normal. But when I pressed down quicker it bogged and a few seconds later died. And it's not like I mashed the pedal to the floor, just pressed a little quicker and further than the first time. Then I couldnt get it started again after several tries. I pulled off the IDI cover and checked the plug boots, made sure the springs where touching both the coils and the plugs and put it back on, cranked it again and got it started. Now it'll start whenever I crank it but same thing happens when I press the gas, it bogs and then dies. Anybody have any idea? Remember this idles and runs off boost on the stock fuel system so I'm stumped as to what the problem might be. Any help is appreciated.

What do You have the rebic set to? Looks like what is happening is that you are going past the set boost mark on the rebic when you quickly hit the gas causing the injectors to dump too much fuel (flooding the motor). I would bet you have the RPM on the rebic set moderately low with the fuel knob maxxed out and the boost knob set somewhere in high vaccuum. I ran a rebic myself and can tell you that the boost knob measures in bar format, so I belive all the way to the left would still leave it in vaccuum, causing you to trigger it.

It doesn't have anything to do with the extra injectors or the Rebic. The extra injectors come on during boost only and I don't even get to 0 vacuum let alone into boost. It idles and as soon I press down the gas literally less than a quarter of an inch it dies. I can barely even get the thing to rev to 1500. One thing I did forget to mention is I had to lengthen the wires for the TPS. I'm going to go out now and check over a few things now and I'll check back later to see if anyone else has any ideas.

I was just about to say it might have something to do with the tps before reading that you lengthened the wires. There's your problem.

Seeing that the cat is brand new and the car has ran for a total of 3 and a half minutes, no it's not plugged.

So what's the outcome with the tps wire that you double-checked?

I took out the wire that i used to lengthen the sensor and realized that I didn't even need to lengthen it because it fits. I think I had the TB turned a different way at first but how it sits now the TPS wire doesn't need to be any longer. Tried to start it and it wouldn't start. It only cranks once or twice and then sounds like it would fire right up, but then shuts down, almost like it sparks then doesn't. I'm going to check the plugs and unplug the battery to reset the TPS and see what happens.

Figured it out. Wasn't the TPS...I had a check valve between the manifold and the MAP sensor. Apparently the engine didn't really like that so I took it out and it runs perfect. Now I need a way to hide boost from the MAP sensor.

you dont have to worry about the stock map sensor seeing boost. it will not mess with it.

glad you got it fixed.

I read a few posts saying it would throw a code or possibly damage the MAP sensor if it was left open to boost pressure. So this is info is wrong?

i had a check valve inline for my map and the car didnt like it one bit.......i took it out and i am just running a straight vacuum line....i have not throw a code yet.....car runs great
