help a fellow hard-headed jbody owner

Hi guys...

I know a guy in my area who has swapped an 05 ecotec in his older cav... He's installing a turbo kit in the next few weeks. I noticed what I think are major flaws in it, but he will not listen to me when I point them out... with reason probably because I'm unable to explain it to him due to my limited knowledge of mechanics... but I did learn a whole bunch here...

He is planning on running a T3 .42 ar at 8 psi. Here's the good part: no intercooler, no upgraded fuel pump, not even upgraded injectors. He's planning to tune it with an s-afc only. I tried to explain to him that the s-afc is not good enough. Add to this the fact that he has a 05 ECU which means no open loop operation and a constant 14.7 A/F ratio...

So please post in here to explain why his kit is so inadequate... hopefully after seeing your explanations he will reconsider and maybe not blow his engine...

He'll listen after he blows up and no sooner.

that's what I figure... but it'd be such a shame to blow an engine that's basically new (4000 miles)...

Sometimes that's what it takes though. He'll either do it right the first time or pay big to do it right the second time.

Oh boy, he is in a world of trouble, did I tell you all about that one time when we tried to tune 2004 Cavy on stock ECU before we got it reprogramed to 2002.
I maxed out the pump (255 Wally), 360 cc injectors at 80 psi of fuel pressure with S-AFC correction at +50% still was getting 13.6:1 A/F on like 6 psi, it was dangerous.

Like Hypsy said sometimes that is what it takes for people to listen. Unfortunatelly.

Quote:

no intercooler

When his turbo heats up, it will heat up the air going into the engine a LOT. Less dense air=Less 02=Less combustion=Less power per psi.
Plus a risk of pre-detonation, me thinks.

Quote:

no upgraded fuel pump

The stock pump was designed to supply fuel for an N/A engine, it can't hold up to pumping fuel at a high psi forever. When it fails, and he runs lean...boom.

Quote:

not even upgraded injectors

Same as the fuel pump, designed for an N/A motor, can't pump at it's max ability forever. They'll fail, he'll run lean, then boom.

To the best of my knowledge this information is all correct....if not, please correct me. I don't have any hands-on boost experience.

Tell him to take lots of video as he drives it hard. I'd like to see.

screw it, if he doesn't want to listen, let him blow it the hell up.... you'll drive yourself crazy if you spend your whole life trying to save others from their obstinate stupidity.

all right except the last one. your right stock injectors are made for n/a, but even if they are maxed out, they cant flow enough fuel for ANY boost. which means the very first time he hits boost it could go boom.

Just ask him how a SAFC works.....if he doesn't know then he should realize that he isn't ready to do this to his car.....if he does know he should realize that it won't do everything he is expecting out of it.

You could take him to johnyracecar.com and find a cheap intercooler..
I ran mine non intercooled for a wile... you can get a intercooler for under 300.00 their...
or e-bay a old sidemount...

Tell him to check out the piston in my reg. That is what happens when you use only band-aid management, as he wants to do. That picture was after 2 weeks of abuse, when it just wouldn't start anymore.
