LD9 vs. Ecotec -- Lets settle this
Friday, April 14, 2006 7:12 AM
Ok, when i dropped off the face of the planet from this board a couple years ago, the Ecotec was still pretty new, and the ever on going fued was slowly starting to boil. Now that ive been back for a few weeks... this is getting kind of rediculous. I mean seriously, to myself, an engine builder of 13yrs... its a no brainer as to which engine is better. However, some people just arent convienced.

So how do we settle this w/o it turning into, "well my dad can beat up your dad!" or, "my kid can beat up your honor student!"...

J-Bash??? Screw that... too much crap that happens there... vendors, parties... too much garbage.

Lets get some ideas here...

There will never be a line you can draw, somebody can and will build a better engine on both sides. The only way to do it is to take a stock engine, put IDENTICAL, either nitrous or turbo, and see where they blow up, last one wins. Then you have to repeat it to weed out freaks and to statistically show...

Now, if you have that much money to throw away, all the better, but I don't see this happening anytime in the future.

Agreed. I had both. Both are awesome engines.

Both are not awesome engines, simply by design the 2.4 is inferior, its a cast iron block with an aluminum head, so it has head gasket problems, not to mention its considerably heavier which is not a good thing.

Rod bearings suck on the 2.4 and a healthy diet of water pumps every 50k are problems the ecotec doesnt have. Stock on Stock the 2.4 wins, its a bigger displacement engine, but even that will be contested as many stock ecos have beaten z24s. When it comes to modding theres really no comparision at all. The 2.4 internal just is much weaker, many of the things you see being done to ecotecs such as the hahn kit or torture tests well into the upper teens on boost, the eco has yet to be broken on properly tuned boost, to be honest we dont even yet know the real limit on how much psi it can take with proper afr, Josh from FL put it up to 23psi before and didnt blow it up, QBE is running 14psi and beats the living hell out of his car and hasnt blown it up. 2.4s have a very poor reliability even NA much less under heavy modding.

I just dont see alot of posts on here with ppl with 2.4s doing the same stuff like running double digits on boost and holding up, they usually need to replace everything to do those types of things. Most new parts that are coming out now are geared to the ecotec, the 2.4 was never that strong in the aftermarket to start with, its even weaker now, virtually any part is out there for the ecotec now and anything new coming out is for it.

People tell me how I am an @!#$ and how they wish I wreck my car and such, they wish I get banned forever and blah blah blah,,,

Bt the only thing I did was state my opinion, I know I wrote this is only MY opinion, and still everyone jumped me.
All the LD9 guys are gonna say LD9 and the Eco guys L61.

The daily driven 400hp 2.4 seemed to be pretty reliable, and that was over 2 years ago.

Ok, this is going to be nipped in the bud before it becomes a flame war akin to what we saw back in the day of 2.2 OHV vs 2.4L LD9.

Those who work on these engines, and have truly done their homework know what engine is better for what and why. That doesn't stop people from choosing to modify a 2.2 OHV, for example, because that is what piques their interest. For that you have to respect someone regardless, because there is always something bigger and better around the corner, yet they choose to stay with their engine of choice. Invariably everyone moves on to other engines, and that does not mean that the engine they were building is bad. It may just mean they took it as far as they wanted, and want to try new things.

So, bottom line, just respect people's decisions. If you are still up in the air yourself, just do your homework. Pick what is best for you, your abilities, and your budget. No matter what you pick, there are better engines out there, so really who cares if someone wants to knock your decision. If someone is ripping into you for picking an LD9 over an Ecotec, go get a Mustang, Camaro, GTO or Corvette buddy to put them in their place.
