I've noticed that most of the custom setups have the longer front mount IC's. I was thinkin of using like a DSM or a supra Side mount IC. Is this a bad idea? I plan on running like 8-9 psi 210ish hp on a LD9. Do the side mounts just not offer enough surface area or what. Just wondering.
I have a DSM side mount, and it works fine for me, 8 psi.
side mounts can work, but just like the turbo itself, needs to be matched properly to your hp goals. a stock DSM intercooler is pretty efficient (i hear the Gen 1's are better), or you could look for upgraded SMIC's for VW, or Silvia, etc... A shop called Tyrolsport the builds upgraded smic's for VW ran a bunch of datalogs to find that their GTI sidemount actually gave increased power over a larger and more popular FMIC kit. The theory behind why is that since the SMIC doesn't obstruct airflow to the radiator, allowing the engine to run cooler at full tilt, and with lower engine coolant sensor readings came an increase in timing advance from the ECU. I don't have enough info about how the timing maps are related to other sensors in Jbody ecus to say for sure that the same would hold true in your case, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. You just have to find a core that will fit in your desired location that is big enough to flow enough CFM for your hp requirement. Ducting to the SMIC will also help.
I haven't been underneath a Jbody in a while, so i'm not sure if you could fit one big enough for your purposes.... but here's a detailed article from your cousins at TurboSaturns.net on intercooler choice

where do you have it mounted?
Well I have a 97 Eclipse sidemount thats seen it's miles. If you want to have at it I'll send it for just the shipping cost. We just took it out so my cousin could put a frontmount in his car.....
the sidemount from a VW (ei corrodo G60) would be way to small, not sure about the DSM stuff though.
I've seen a cavy with a top mount sitting where the battery used to sit, he had a small hood scope and that was it, I believe he had a WRX or RX7 cooler or something. But he bought it from someone who was upgrading to a FMIC.

can i have the dimensions of it..
Ken, can we get some under the hood shots?
yeah pics would be greatly appreciated
Sure,
I have it mounted behind the driver side fender
7-1/2" fin surface area width, 13" overall case width, 8-1/2" fin surface height, 3" depth, 2" inlet and outlets. One outlet is on the top pointed up, the other is on the front side and comes out at a 45 degree. I'm going to try to post a pic in a bit tho.
