I'll keep it brief. I'm beginning to think about boost. I'm leaning towards the GM Charger, but I don't know a whole lot about the subject. I don't think of myself as a noob who wants to boost my stock engine up to 500 horsepower and run 5's in the 1/4. I want to learn, then go for it. Realistically, my goal is 220 whp. Can anyone recommend some real good posts or books to read prior to trying this. Thanks.

search for airtronics post about his install
with a good header back exhaust , and intake , and intercooler set up
and youll be in that range with the kit
^^^^ what he said, and that's also the route I'm probably going to take.

the gm supercharger is probably your best option as someone just getting into modding your car and wants extra power. As long as you follow the directions with the kit, its basically idiot proof. It won't give you 220 whp right out of of the box, but the M62 IS capable of 280 hp on the LSJ 2.0, and possibly more, so on the 2.2 ecotec it should have slightly more potential... If you want, you could just swap all of the parts off of the LSJ (from the Cobalt SS and Ion Redline), and that would give you the air-water intercooler as well which will ultimately give you the ability to make more power through more boost and ignition advance (compared to the GM kit's non-intercooled mani). But if this isn't up your alley yet, get the GM kit and you can swap in some of the cobalt stuff later.
While the M45 for the 2.4 was kind of a joke, the M62 for the eco (be it the GM kit, or the Cobalt SS hardware) will probably start giving some of the turbo cars around here a run for their money. If nothing else, a supercharged car will be easier to launch because of the flatter, more predictable torque curve and steady rise in power through the rpm band... Turbos tend to have torque spikes since spool and boost are based on load which can vary with driving conditions and make driving them a bit tricky sometimes. Since the supercharger is dependent almost solely on RPM for boost level, it will be a little bit more rookie-friendly.
Turbo kits (well some at least) will be cheaper, but some 03 and all 04-05 ecos have known fuel issues which will require the reflash or using an 02 ecu, and likewise, you still have to drill holes in the block and head for oil return/feed, whereas i don't believe you have to do this for the supercharger. If you're reasonably sure that you'll never want more than 280 whp, and an easy install with OE fitment, than the supercharger is for you. If you may want more power, and don't mind a trickier installation, than maybe you should look at a turbo. That's just my advice, obviously the choice is up to you and others will disagree with me, but in my mind, although the GM kit is waaaaaaayyy late, its still a good mod, especially for the average joe that just wants very reliable power in easy to install kit form.

i dont see why some people dog on the 2.4 charger, yes its non-intercooled and only limited to 11-12.5 psi but i think its damn decent. sure its not the best choice if you want to make over 300whp or anything but of course theres other mods you need to do to make it all run together. i ran a 15.9 stock and with the gm charger and a intake i ran a 14.7, thats 1.2 seconds shaved off the bat which is pretty good for only pushing 5 psi before i added my bored t/b on.
another reason why i think the chargers pretty good is because the redlines and SS's are pushing like 10psi from the factory and i have beaten them with my 6 psi while theyre on their 14 psi which is more than twice the amount of boost im pushing, yes the chargers are differant but im still supporting the gm charger for the 2.4 to anyone who wants boost. i know the SS engine swapped in a j-body makes us run a low 14 which is really good but this is just my opinion on this topic that was mentioned in the post above. dont take it the wrong way.

no you don't, cuz no one's swapped in an SS engine yet, just the charger kit. If you beat a cobalt, thats because your car is lighter, and as a lot of us saw at the Bash, a lot of cobalt drivers are apparently just as bad (if not worse) as SRT4 drivers lol.
I only rag on the GM 2.4 charger because you can tell from its design that GM missed one of the most important qualities that people in the so-called "tuner movement" are looking for.... future upgradeability. Its not just that its not intercooled, its that there's NO WAY to intercool it without severe modification because the intake mani and blower are one piece. Which also makes porting it very difficult. The only thing you CAN do is get a smaller pulley and you can only go so small before you start overheating that little sucker. I mean, its good for what its advertised for, but unfortunately, it just isn't good for too much more.

the 2.4 charger with a 2.5 pulley and coolingmist injection kit to keep her cool along with a decently routed cold air intake would really suprise you.

A substantial one... But they neglected to tell me they meant the 2.4 kit... meh...
Holy Hell I just got a ride in Bryan Festa/Defined Parts/Ecripter's car. He got the ECO supercharger, the one that was released...Not the one off the cobalt. That thing is wicked fast. i'm sure hes going to post soon. The GM performance tech from Ohio was flown out New Jersey to install it.
lol thanks for spilling the information Adam
. Yeah the GM kit comes intercooled has everything that you need and was a great deal worth the price you pay. It's simple, is OEM, and it's fast like Adam said. Just make sure that you get a good tank of premium in there before the install because I found it was pulling to much timing from me and I had to put in some booster to make up for it plus top off with premium. But now things are smoothing out.

wait now I'm confused... the gm kit comes intercooled as in it has everything you need to intercool it just like the ss cobalts and ion redlines or you had to buy some other stuff ?
Either way you're a lucky bastard man I wish I could buy it right now but still gotta wait about a month until I have the cash.

i think they are saying it comes with the ability to be intercooled. you still need to buy the actual lines and core.
it comes 'intercool ready' which means it does not come intercooled, but is capable of being, u have the option to intercool it in the future
