hi i was woundering if there is a difference between the 98 knock sensor and the 99, its for a 2.4 i called to get a price on a 99 and they said there is no differnce between the 98 and 99 is this true? the reason why im asking is because i have a 98 i want to use the emanage, i found a place that will flash my computer to a 99,i think i read somewere that you have to switch to a 99 knock sensor, please help me out.
yeah big difference
the 98-older screwes into the block
the 99-up has a bolt that holds it to the block
right on thanks so the guy at the parts store is wrong, how do i put a 99 knock sensor onto a 98
1 you gotta have a 99 pcm(or reflashed to a 99) to work with newer knock sensor
then you have to add a wire for the 99-02 knock sensor , add it to the pcm plug and move old knock wire over 1 spot , the 99-02 knock is 2 wires , the 98-older is 1 wire
then you gotta figure out how to mount the knock sensor to the block since the 99-02 uses a smaller thread size
you might want to search the arcive and see if you can find the post for the pcm swap
I have a post in the archives in the performance forum of how to do this.
Main differences:
98: 1 wire sensor plugs into pin 33 of the blue connector of the PCM, much larger thread goes into back of block
99: 2 wire sensor plugs into pin 32 and 34 of the blue connector of the PCM, smaller thread.
My 1999 knock sensor is bolted to a stud on the FRONT of the block just beside the oil filter.
Easy stuff.

so does it matter where it is placed? also do i completly remove the 98 knock sensor? one lat question im takin the car in hopefully on monday, do i neeed to get the 99 injectors installed then so i can drive home, i will be switching to 440 cc once i hav the turbo and everything else installed. thanks for all your help
im running the 2.3HO injectors on the 99 pcm
and yes it does matter where the knock sensor goes if you want the motor to live , it needs to be in the block
alright well i greatly appreciate all of your inputs, where are some places that you have mounted your knock sensor
can i run the 98 injectors with the reflash until i get my 440 or do i have to use the 99 injectors as soon as i get the reflash?
since your removing the EGR also (99 reflash) instead of running a new wire for that Knock sensor, just repin one of the EGR wires, and use that as the 2nd wire..... saves alot of time..... you could actually repin 2 egr wires, so that they come out of the same wire loom....
I've bolted the knock sensor up front, by the oil filter.... and on the end of the block, where the brake booster tube bolts (under the power steering pump, above the transmission)

even though the 99 is high impedence it will run the injectors from a 98?
what if you were to find a bushing that fits into the 98 thread that tappers to a 99 thread, would that work or am i better off using a differnt mounting spot, for the spot by the oil filter did you have to drill and tap a new hole?

Using a bushing and stock location would be best.
