Have you ordered an Eco Supercharger Kit ????
Wednesday, February 15, 2006 5:41 PM
Has anyone ordered an Eco charger kit yet ?
I mean actually payed some money, not "planning" to do so.

The reason I ask is because I know for a fact that they are available to order right now.
Also, based on the # of people who have bee bitching about it taking so long, I figure alot of them would have been ready to jump up immediately to get theirs since they have been screaming for it like forever.

and then there's the sheer # of people complaining about it either way. This thead here, http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=40&i=101196&t=101196 , is only the most recent and its 7 pages long.

My true reason for asking, and it may piss some people off, is to show that no matter how much a few people want to scream, no one really seems to want to buy these products in the end.

A little history... When GM produced the 2.4SC kit, they purchased parts for and packaged 1000 kits. 2 years after the kits were 1st available, GM had sold... get ready for this.... 32 kits!!, and this included N-bodies and J-bodies. GM decided to just destroy 750 of the kits to reduce the inventory so only 218 more kits were still available. I asked today (2 more years later) and I was told there are still well over 150 kits in storage.
So in the end (where it seems GM took it), after spending the money to develop, produce, calibrate, and certify (CARB) this package which could probably fit over 500,000 cars (2000-2002 J and N bodies with 2.4) GM still hasn't sold even 100 units. Maybe (I hope) the GM guys have managed to recover the cost of development at the current #.

But in the end, how many Eco units do you really think they will end up selling?

I have no idea how many Eco units GM will sell. But I have the cash in hand and I am 100% ready to order this kit when it lands at the door step of paceperformance. I also purchased a 2.4L Twin Cam from pace as well.

Correction: 2.4L Twin Cam Supercharger

damn, destroy 750 kits........ I wish I was dumpster diving in their dumpster that day......

I am willing to bet (althought its pointless) that if the kit (2.4) would have come out 2 years earlier, they would have easily sold 200....... but they waited (maybe the CARB cet. took to long) and people who would have bought the charger went in other directions (I was one who wanted one bad...... and even tried to purchase a used one once *BWALL*.... before going turbo.)

That and limiting them to 2000-2002 (although 96 + can use it) really put a hamper on things.......... and just about the same time as they release the kit, the EcoTec took over...... if GM was smart about it, they would have had that Eco kit on the shelves the day the '02 Eco's hit the lots..... to make up for the loss they took on the 2.4 kits..... (damn.... still cant get over the DISTRUCTION of 750 perfectly good kits)

Did they count right? I am pretty sure that there are around 32 people here alone that have that supercharger. Maybe they did not buy it from GM themselves. I just think they screwed us over big time on that deal. No intercooler option, a small as super and only for the manual to begin, and only one reflash for the 2000 up. What about the rest of the years? LOL They would have sold many more if it came out for the autos also at the same time as the manual. More would have known about it and if they had them for the earlier years.

Re: Have you ordered an Eco Supercharger Kit ????

Yeah if they had released this Kit 1 year or more ago they would have sold a lot more, instead they dragged their feet (with little or no explanation, at least publicly) a lot of promises, which all turned out to be BS. From reading this forum for the past year I have seen a lot of people build turbo setups on the eco platform, many which might have opted for the S/C kit had it been released.
Now that it comes out and turns out to be a watered down version, a lot of people just have a sour taste in their mouths, does GM really deserve to sell any kits? I think their PR shot themselves in the foot again. I also feel the same way about the Cobalt, just a big let down.

Really, who in their right behind besides somebody who is super concerned about reliability and warranty issues is going to go buy the GM S/C Kit over the Hahn Stage 2 kit considering the performance superiority and upgradability of the Hahn kit? Hahn has proven themselves to the community, and has given actual results when all GM has done is talk and broken promises and release dates.

Christ!, by the time this kit is actually out into circulation, Who is still going to have a Cavalier under factory warranty besides someone who bought one in 2005 and let it sit in the garage?

I ordered mine on the 9th and the dealer called me yesterday and told me that it was shipped out monday and should be here in a few days.

Like everyone else said...if they had released the kits alot sooner people would have jumped on the 2.4 kits.

As for this GM kit for the ECOTEC, I would have been all over it but GM dragged their feet and also GM dealers tried to rip me off, so I decided to go the Turbo route which overall I'm glad I did.

Thank you GM for screwing up and losing a customer.

The one thing Im running into is no one wants to touch the kit either. Im trying to get the reflash set up and I asked a few people what would you charge for install? I called 4 dealerships all of them told me that they wont do the install or the reflash except one and theyre going to get back to me to "see" if they have the means to do the reflash tomorrow. I dont have a problem doing the install but itd be nice if dealerships were informed on what the hell theyre supposed to do to support the kit that GM sells. I mean what does it say for the company when theyre own dealers say thins like "we wont install anything on a car that didnt come on the car from the factory, regardless of who made it." Those were pretty much exact word from 2 of the dealerships.

the reflash wasnt available to the techs monday........i called.........and i am a tech @ one of the largest aftermarket dealers in arizona. We deal with alot of supercharger kits and turbo kits for a decent following of gm vehicles mostly tahoes and suburbans.

But i have been callin and have case report and i am to be called when it is available.

If GM was smart, they would have developed the supercharger for the ecotec before the cars came out, the offered it as a factory option. I would have added anothe 5g's onto my loan for a supercharger.

x3

The reason GM screwed me over was cause I was trying to re-finance my car with the GM charger added, mind you I already payed off 2 years on my loan (4 year loan). They wanted $5000 for kit and installation and they said I need atleast $1000 down and with that it would be $336 a month for 5 years....$20,160 for a used Sunfire with a supercharger. Make sense on why I went turbo?

I'm probably going to go junkyard hunting for a ss/redline setup.... this should be much cheaper than *gasp* 5300 CAD $ before installation. I was looking forward to the kit but this is just more money than I'm willing to invest in a kit that's not even intercooled or installed.

The only problem with this is that they are not being shipped yet. When you posted in the other thread that yours is on the way I called GM and they said the supercharger kit is in the final stages of durability testing and another update will be coming on Feb 23rd
or Feb 28th. Your dealer is bull sh-tting you and I would suggest you do not hold your breath. Your kit may be "on the way" but you won't see it till at least sometime in March.

But in answer to your question YES I have cash waiting for it so when it does get released I can get mine.

I bet you alot more people would of ordered the kit if along with other reasons stated if it put out more than 40HP! and it wasn't so expensive when it first came out. Hopefully the Eco s/c will sell better.

i think GM's biggest problem is the TWO YEAR DELAY since they first said it would be out. They told me and and Exterminator at the J-body Bash in Lordstown in 2004 that it would be out within a few weeks. Now, two years later, Exterminator got fed up and went turbo, when he would have given them his credit card on the spot for one of those supercharger kits.

As to the 2.4, GM screwed the pooch on that one too. Hype the kit, then release it only for 2000up models of an engine that had been used since the early 90s? What the hell were they thinking? Not to mention that they did little to make it truly desireable, the M45 is just too small for people looking for much over 200 hp, and with no way to intercool it or port it since the charger is one piece with the manifold, there wasn't a whole lot of room to grow from there.

Now the eco charger is finally coming out, and it doesn't feature the intercooler that the 2.0 gets, and again, only makes 200 hp... GM apparently doesn't realize that the enthusiast market moves too fast and wants more power than this... a 2 year wait for 200 ponies that could easily be beaten by a Hahn kit for the same price, a kit that has proven reliable already? It appears as if the guys at GM performance just picked up an issue of Super Street and used that as the basis for their entire knowledge of the sport compact enthusiast market... They'll try and say that the stuff doesn't sell, but what they apparently don't realize is people with the money to spend on their kits don't want to wait 2 years, they will find another solution that IS available. So you know what, if the eco charger fails, its not anyone's fault but GM's for poor planning and implementation.

For those actually counting the supercharged LD9 cavaliers in the members section to try and test Todd's statement, keep in mind a lot of us have passed around s/c kits by selling them. Mine was originally purchased from Pace Parts by Ian Brydon and then sold to me back in December of 2k4. I then turned around and sold the s/c to Rob Weis in the fall of 2k5. Granted, I think Rob and I are the only two with the s/c in our profiles (I maintain a history of my vehicles and their modifications), but consider this an example to the duplicates located in the member registries.

This is a perfect example why J's arn't widely supported in the aftermarket community. I'm sure this happens with other vehicles, but more so with J owners.

On my part, poor financial planning (suspension first) and 1 more measly school term keep me from pruchaseing that GM kit today.

I think the Eco kit dosn't suffer the same major downfall the 2.4L kit did. The Eco kit is made of a good portion of production parts from a couple other cars. Granted there must be some unique pieces, but not as many as the 2.4L's kit contained.

Re: Have you ordered an Eco Supercharger Kit ????

^^^ yup 99% of the 2.4 kit wasnt from something else

95% of the eco kit is from production vehicles

Aftermarket support for Js???

Why ever bother?

As this post proves, there are a decent amount of J-body loudmouths bitching away about a lack of products and/or delays in production of products. But in the end, those same loudmouths never had any intention of buying the product anyway.

For this whole post so far, only two people have intentions of getting a kit.
2

I seriously doubt HP Tuners will have any more luck with their products if they ever do us the favor to make it apply to J-bodies. Maybe they realize the truth and thats why it has never happened.

All I know is I got mine.

Well at the time I used to want to boost my car. I still do but know that I am engaged and ready to move on in life some things take a back seat. Please don't speak like noone wants to spend money on their cars. They are just smart. Why spend X amount on something when you can get better for the same amount?

gm would have done better to realease the reflash as is, and yes 2 years ago. for say $100.. it would have done VERY well (basically on every bosted eco), and still would do very well. not require the s/c kit. they wont make money on the kit cuz j owners wont cough the dough. but, i think HPT will do well since it will give a good reason to get a j. i'd say with good tuning solution, j's are on par with any other platform, better than most id say. the eco is not plauged with some major problems other guys have. its been 4 years and no major findings i've heard of..

a reflash for 96-99 would be smart even now. that was the reson the 2.4 kit failed. that and, what, 14% of j's are sticks? far less are Z's or GT's. so yeah.. not selling to 96-99 was the kicker, and 1 piece combo s/c manifold was just plain dumb.. so all in all i cant say im surprised they sold so few. the eco kit should do better.. but i agree 2 years ago and < $3000 they would have done much better than they'll do. go figure, GM draggin ass.. never heard of that before.
