This thread is to poll all ecotec owners that have their motors boosted. Briefly read through this:
http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=30&i=31299&t=31299 to give you an idea what Im asking for.
Id like some info as to what company you went with and their stage. Or if you did custom, give a brief breakdown of the turbo you used, intercooled or not, your turbo manifold, injectors and anything else you consider relevant
Include things like other supporting mods (like rk's spark plug boots) and any issues you had/have with the system.
Ive read reviews on the web, but thats not an enthusiast forum, hence this poll. If you have a dyno sheet, please post it. Use imageshack.us or something to post it. Or atleast give an appropriate estimate of how much power you think you have (dont just copy what the many SAYS you should have)
And finally, how much it costed you. I dont need full details for everything, because im no noob, im just gathering opinions.
From what I've seen, most popular, and reliable turbo set-up for the ecotec seems to be the Hahn stage 2 kit. Essentially, bolt on and go, no fabrication or other mods needed, and they include all hardware, etc. I'm not boosted yet, but am buying this kit in March/April.
As for a kit, Hahn Racecraft is the only way to go for the Ecotec. They've done very much research and development and have put out a kit that puts down very good numbers. The stage II kit is the most complete kit I've seen so far.
If you're only looking for turbo setups then I won't be able to list my setup, I have an s/c'd Cavi. If you'd like more info, either let me know or check my profile.
You may also want to check the Boosted J-Body List floating around in the boost forum. Its an entire list of all boosted members on the Org and a short description of their setup. If you find a setup that interests you, you could do a search for their profile or get in touch with them via email or PM.
Blown.
Not all the boosted cars from the org are on that list. I'm living proof.
FDFK,
Are y'all in or apart of FSAE at a University? That would be the best source for making an Formula 1 style car. I'm apart of the program and we build an Formula 1 car (not style) from scratch every year. It's a lot of work, engineering and money. The Ariel Atom would also be a good source, because it is running and ecotec and it is based off a Formula style road car. What you need before you get started is 1. An electric welder, a radial arm saw, a vise, a grinding wheel, a circular grinder, wheel, a mill, a lathe, a drill, a cnc machine, a dremel or roto zip, a hand saw, a hammer, a socket wrench, a pipe bender and band saw. Then you need a lot of aluminium and carbon. Steel is too heavy. These are essential. If you don't have access to these, your car will not perform the way you want it to. Pinpoint accuracy is of upmost importance. If you are not very accurate, you will have flex on the frame and it will hurt performance. You will also need some light material. 850 lbs is a good goal, but is extremely hard to come by. You may be able to do it. It depends on how you want the car to run. Now all I told you is for an extremely well built car. This is part of the formula for success we follow. If you are just building just to be building, then use whatever. We build for serious competition between universities and have to comply with strict restrictions. Anyway, good luck.
Sorry, I should have specified what I actually meant; in no way did I mean that every member is on that last even though I wrote it. My apologies!
Blown.
I put my setup together myself and I have been running 5-7 psi since the end of August.
I used Blaastperformance.com for a t3/t04 turbo, internally wastegated (.63/.60) which puts me in full boost by about 4800 rpms. i also got my oil lines, wastegate and various flanges from Blaast. I got my exhaust manifold from a guy in Canada who sells them on ebay. It is a very nice manifold and perfect for the budget custom setup. I used 2.5" bends and straights from Summit Racing to do my intercooler piping and welded my own exhaust and downpipe. My intercooler is a 6"model from johnnyracecar.com. For fuel I am using Bosch 440cc injectors, Aeromotive AFPR, Walbro 255lph intank pump, Vortech FMU, 4:1 disc and a SAFCII unit. All other parts are listed in my registry. NGK tr-6's provide my spark. If you have any specific questions just email me. Good luck with your project.
Overall cost of my setup~$2400
Boosted Eco @7psi for now....GTO come spring.....
I can speak on behalf of my self brandoson and his soon to be boosted brother.
We are running the saab setup.
all parts from saab
tdo4 turbo
saab manifold
custon intercooler pipes
johnnyrace car 6inch budget intercooler
fmu
saab injectors.......green top
blazer fuel pump...i think brandoson has this
bov from saab setup.
So far brando has hit 13.8 in the 1/4 with only 6 psi
his a/f is in the 11-12 range threw the power band
and boost is almost instan as you floor it, ot sure on the exact rpm range but i woudl say
2500 rpm you see full boost.
now many say the turbo from the saab is to small but we are goin for really fun street car rather than all out drag car.
Yea i spell liek wrong get over it.
^^^ yeah what he said.
I have had 3 different turbo setups on my car and the saab manifold with td04 turbo is by far the most fun to drive.
like he said, instant spool. It actually hits full bost under 2500 rpm
"Growing old is mandatory. Growing up? Definitely optional."
If you want to run the Saab stuff let me know,I have one or two of them now or you could talk to Brandon as well, he really seems to have this retro down pat.
Check out my car....
