i got a used kit from on here, but i got mega worries that im gonna blow my engine to bits.
the kit came with a garette t3/t4 turbine external waste gate and its a 60 a/r what ever that means? i got a blow off valve, fmu (vortec), manual boost controller (xsturbo) intercoller and pipes. i was going to run one exaust pipe into 2 and no muffler, but i get a cat and resonator and go 3 inch piping. i want to run 10 to 12 psi when racing or extreme condition and 6-8 everyday.
also i got 550 cc injector too and buying a high flow pump on the way.
with all that what else do i need to keep my engine running good? i was thinking megasquirt? do i need any other ignition things?
another thing would i need a oil cooler? i dont drive that far maybe 40 kms a day?
i just worried about controlling the turbo and keeping my engine in tune?
any help is very welcome and appriciated.
"secret cams" and a h.o manifold too will be going in.
mega squirt is amazing im going to be running it soon..it really all depends on your tune but if its a 2.4 LD9 id really recommend not going above 10 on stock internals i know a few run 11 on track with a good tune but i mean its a good tune...12 is really really pusing it.. check my post on mega squirt some ok info....but i go to UTI and i have a teacher thats really really big into the sport compact and i asked him what he thinks and he said its amazing he has some friends usin it and what not forthe money its worth it...good luck and boost is addicting so addictin im workin for 15psi(ish)
speed kills, drive slow, drive a honda
You are what you Drive!
nick, not doing anything to put you on edge but why are you buying this stuff for stock internals? or do you have forged bottom end? From what ive herd (i may be wrong) the 10-12 psi for racing on stock internals will hurt the motor for sure but i dont know about the 6-8 psi you might be safe with the 6 psi if no forged internals. if you dont have them then i would upgrade those befoer anything else!! but hey thats just me!!
OH AND FILL OUT YOUR PROFILE!!! ADD THE CAR!!! WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOUR WORKING WITH!!
In order to use Megasquirt, you'll need a laptop and a wideband o2 sensor to tune. It'll take a while to learn it and set it up but its well worth the money. As for the wideband sensor, in order to have a proper running boost setup you'll need a wideband to monitor your a/f ratio. I purchased the Innovate Motorsports LM-1 wideband kit from Karo at Carcustoms. You have a few choices like the AEM UEGO gauge (which is only a gauge), a Zeitronix unit, or PLX devices (www.plxdevices.com).
What Vortech FMU do you have? Do you know what ratio it is, meaning is it 12:1, 8:1, etc? If not, do you know the part number?
What do you plan on doing with ignition? What spark plugs have you looked into?
In order to run a proper, powerful setup you may want to do internal work. I wouldn't boost past 5psi without a built LD9.
What transmission do you have? If you have an automatic then I strongly recommend purchasing a transmission cooler. The main reason auto trannies fail is due to the extreme amounts of heat generated by the added power.
Kyle (aka Rawkfist) makes a good point - fill out your profile. Fill in your car information by 'adding' your J-Body and filling in its specifics. It'll help us out in trying to help you.
Blown.
You guys are scaring him. I would run 10psi all day long, just richen her up and pull a little timing.
Blew it up

Haha, sorry if I come off that way. I would just rather play it safe than sorry and risk saying something that may/may not screw things up. I was hoping to cover all my bases in a full-out boost project.
Blown.
okay i upgraded my info i guess i didnt see the section before sorry. anyways i will what ever to get it running good, like wide band o2 stuff and the megasquirt. the only thing i dont want open that engine up cause i will have no car . i will have to build it if it blows knock on wood that it doesnt happen. i will bring it in for a dyno and tuning session to make sure it running okay. as for the 10-12 doesnt it say that it might be okay in the FAQ? intercooled?
anyways worst comes to worst i'm run 10 to 11 psi to be safe. im talking only in a drag race
not every day.
oh planing on a stage one clutch? it says can handle 250 trq? do you guys think it will hold at 10 psi?
plugs i held tr6's any suggestions will be taken sreiously .
it runs really good no problems and i have bosh platinium 4 in it. seems pretty strong, has 158000kms on it too.
good idea thanks. another thing im keeping this car for at least two more years so if it blews/breaks im going to fix it till im bankrupt. it was a gift from my mom who passed away so this car means alot to me. i know she wants me to have the baddest one in ottawa lol
the body inst to bad yet either alittle rust at the bottom od the doors and underneath pretty good too.
nick renaud wrote:i know she wants me to have the baddest one in ottawa
Damn right!
Anyway, you should be alright with everything you listed. The TR6's would be fine for your setup, they're one step colder. I have them in my s/c'd Cavi and no problems so far. Having access to a dyno and tuning it there would be a great help to you. It'll give you much better numbers to work with.
Blown.
what about the gap? thanks guys you are the best. its like having a chevy family in my basement.
oh i was checking out the xs boost site and think i got a manual boost controller with two stage of pressures so that will be cool. and im going to look up the part number on my vortec fmu to see which one it is, and am trying to get the fuel pump from them too. maybe one in tank would be nice. man my cavi will be in great mechanical order when im done lol
cams, water pump, fuel pump, recent alternator, clutch soon too bearing last summer. struts and springs man it will be sweet. dont tell anyone k?
one more thing i was going to buy a NOS inline fuel pump from a guy from here what do you's think?
or i was going to order a in tank, direct replacement hi flow one from vortech if they make it or an inline from them ?
whats the best way to go i dont want any troubles with running out of gas or having to fill up at 3/4 of a tank or other @!#$ that i've read about. and how hard is it to make the nos one work if i buy it?
who said i dont know anything? you in a bad mood mr, techo babble? i buying all the right stuff to do it right. i did read the two pages on the garette site.

2. Understanding housing sizing: A/R
A/R (Area/Radius) describes a geometric characteristic of all compressor and turbine housings. Technically, it is defined as:
the inlet (or, for compressor housings, the discharge) cross-sectional area divided by the radius from the turbo centerline to the centroid of that area (see Figure 2.).
better read more carefully next time I guess.... maybe skipped from 101 to 103?

No I'm fine and yea, I guess it is 'techno babble' until you comprehend it huh?
How do you know if you're buying the right stuff? You don't know what it is or how it works. How do you know how to "do it right" if you don't know how to do it?
I don't like when people ask to be baby sat which is basically what you're doing.
If you did half the things you said you did like reading the garrett site, most of your questions would already be answered. And when I tell you that you should probably do more research I catch attitude.
This isn't something you can just throw money at and take the advice of others or go on nothing but 'hear say' when buying all your components. If you expect it to work and work reliably, you'll learn a hard lesson. You need to have the knowledge of your system and your setup and your tune in order to get what you want. You need to know the stuff like turbo sizes, injector sizes, supporting mods, safe boost levels, where to put the BOV, what kind of couplers to get, etc. Don't always go with what someone else tells you... something they want or think is ok might not be acceptable to you...
Without this , when something goes wrong (beacause it will.. it always does) you're going to be SOL.
The phrases "thats good enough", "I think", or "They told me / they said" shouldn't come anywhere close to a normally n/a car that is getting a turbo charger strapped on to it... or for any care for that matter
bottom line, don't get your panties in a bunch I'm trying to do you a favor. if you have the money to do this thats great more power to you, but my suggestion would be to make sure you got the knowledge of how it all comes together to make it work right and keep it that way because things can go wrong really fast, believe me.
Paul - You can help him but EVERY post I saw from nick was complains after complain. He'll be here soon complaining againts his car because HE f*** up. He complained about the B&M shifter saying it didn't make a difference, he complain about his car being sh*** but on the other hands he's modifying it without knowing what he's doing. I can tell you, don't waste your time. He'll want to know everything from people other than read and search. I've been in your place before trying to help him but it's worthless. He'll get back againts you if his setup f**** up.

gee you two want to talk else where? in private? come on, use spell check too.
"hell' get back againts you if his setup f**** up." @!#$ is four letters and @!#$ is six so what where you spelling with five?
money solves everything, trial and error.
as for the complaints why not if its not what you expected and doesnt live up to the hype. i was disapointed so what? @!#$ you.
who gives a @!#$ about a/r its inside. all i care is how much power i can get out my car. i seen your math and @!#$ but didnt give a crap. wow your going to run 10 psi and 15 psi on your @!#$ty 2.2 throw away cavalier. i hope you blow your bottom end and start to cry lol
maybe if you got nothing nice to say dont say anything.
and mfk-223 kiss my ass thanks i have a right to express my self anyway i want. i am the costumer and was not 100% satisfied okay or do i have check with you first before i post anything?

you're a tool
if you want to make power you need that information @!#$. I'm really going to enjoy when you post about your engine blowing up.
who gives a crap about a/r?
alright go grab a 1.08 a/r turbo and put it on your car then we'll see who wins when I'm running a 60 a/r.. of course, throwing examples with numbers in it at you is a like talking to a wall.. except the wall would probably understand more than you do.
Turboing a car isn't something you can "redneck engineer" and "Git R done"
you got lucky buying the turbo if could have been a 80 or larger then you would have been pissed when you wouldn't spool until 5000rpm.

spoken like a true moron. How much will it cost you to make 250hp? $10,000? it looks that way since 'trial and error' is the way you're going to do things. and how long will it last? probably not long since you don't know jack @!#$ about anything.
your car will always be slower than mine, and I will always be smarter than you. Remeber that douche bag.
And I'll relish in the fact that I tried to help you, and being the idiot that you are, you not only refuse my help, then try to insult me only further proving your idiocy.

in case you didn't notice faggot I don't have an OHV anymore, I'm ecotec now. and I'm going to be boosting just a little more than 15 psi, trust me.
don't worry, the first car I'll @!#$ on is your aging pile of crap. It'll be worth a drive out to ottawa just to see the look on your @!#$ face when I blow the doors off of your Z24 with my "techno babble" built car.
I'll be sure to give you the middle finger salut, dumbass. Enjoy your blown motor.
come to ottawa bitch! it's very funny to see you wasting your time typing to me i enjoy pissing poeple off just so you know i do it to everyone lol im not a faggot i @!#$ your wife on my last holiday to the states. oh and whats your band called? the Z24's lol or the ecotecs? i didnt know what engine you have before and still dont care. gee my aging pile of crap is almost the same pile of crap you drive.
Nick
oh ya Git R Done
boost till she wont boost no more
by the way can you find Canda on the map, i heard alot of poeple from the states can't? I'll be a nice guy and give you direction to come to ottawa if you want? and this post was going fine till you "the Jackass" posted so @!#$ off

i know i liked the top portion of this thread then some stuck up pricks come on and blah blah blah and i got insulted and being a hothead wrote some @!#$ too.
so back to the turbo stuff whats a good fuel pump to run without problems? i can get a NOS one cheap and its made from holley and i dont want any problems? like having to fill up at 3/4 tank .
