All the info here is great and am after some more. I own a 99 GT sunfire. I have no idea what the compression is. There is a metal head gasket available on the market. What will that bring my ratio down to? I want to boost the engine but am hesitant because of this missing info. Somehow putting a turbo on this engine just sounds a little crazy. All I know is to properly boost an engine it should be around 8.5:01. I am guessing that this motor is closer to 10.5: 01 to 11:01.
Any info would be appreciated.

There is a popular misconception about compression ratios and boost. 8.5:1 is a little low for a naturally aspirated motor, so it will make not a lot of power until it gets in boost. Anywhere from 9:1 to 10:1 is about perfect for a street car. You can run just about any streetable compression ratio with boost, it just depends on your level of tuning, i.e. ignition retard is a definite, fuel is always necessary, and you have to run higher octane gas. It's all in tuning man. Technically you could make the same amount of power with 6 psi at 10:1 compression as you could with 10 psi at about 9.2:1 compression.
