Blew my engine...
Saturday, January 21, 2006 1:40 AM
Well last night on my way to the gym me and a buddy were tuning with my new PLX 500 widband and the in car dyno, well got some pretty good gains, and turns out after around ~200 hp the engine gave me a big F U. Lol, died in the middle of the road, making the worst of all engine sounds. My first thought was a flattened lifter or a bent push rod, i was really hoping it was just valve train trouble.. Well got it towed, tore the engine out today, and low and behold i've got 4 new paper weights. Yep, cracked a piston, maybe two, not sure, found a whole lot of broken metel though. Aww well, just a new reason to go forged internals and turn up the boost! Just thought id share my misfortune with ya'll, to let you know, not all pistons can handle the power lol at least not 2200 pistons. Funny thing, didnt detonate or anything, good AFR like high 12's low 13's, not sure why but the piston just took a crap.

Congratulations. Now you have a perfectly good reason to build it stronger.

i thought 2200's were limited to around 190hp on stock internals? this was a few years ago i heard this so...

but like above, perfect reason to build it stronger.

Lol well hell if i would of known that they were limited to around 190...Aw who am i kidding i would of blown it anyway, lets face it, I knew it was running on borrowed time, you knew it, baby jesus knew it. Yeah im not to sad, kind of excited really, forged internals are sounding really sweet right now.

I think that the 2.2s can handle over 200hp, they just need a good tune.
The people who come to mind are Alex with a 97 2.2 that put down 204hp with stock internals, Dan Cotter with a 94 2.2 that put down around 230hp on stock internals, Lee who put down 220ish hp on stock internals, and someone else was putting down around 215ish hp on a 2.2 with nitrous.

275hp & 306tq - 1999 2.2 ohv
13.2 @ 108 mph
-1996 2.4 liter + Turbo + Built motor + Torco + More boost = Lots o' Power
-2000 Mustang GT + 2004 Cobra motor, Whipple 2.3 supercharger,
built rear-end,Dodge Viper spec T56 6 speed, bolt-ons = wheelies at the track!!!!!

But incredibly true. I have nothing against Lee. But he does tend to talk about his luck. It's not a fact that he can do it. It's luck. And anyone who tries to follow in his footsteps is just an idiot.

Unfortunately luck has NOTHING to do with a good a/f ratio....................................

It might also have something to do with all the 2.2's described are old and tired................. when I boosted my car.... it ONLY had around 106000km on it ............ Syntec oil from 60000 and some grand ma named grace that drove it before me... (she drove stick... more power to her !!)

Now YES there was luck on my side.... there must have been................

That is why I'm not a dumbass and just purchased a 5 pound gate and a MBC.......... 5 psi next summer till my motor is finished.................. I wanted to push the potential LAST summer........... I did that .... got a MAX WHP number out of it ............ and I even admit it was a fairly lean tune to achieve those numbers........ around a 13.5...................... I don't like seeing ANYTHING else then a 12.5 at full boost.................

Thanks QBE.............................................

yes it was a rather low comment................ I'm not even going to retort..... it doesn't deserve one !!!! oh ya..... NO LAG.....hahaha jks.....

I do not know if Cory has pics of his destruction, but I have pics .

I am in the middle of pulling out a 2.2 that has been turboed on stock internals. The car was tuned by a local shop with only with a Apex S-AFC on 6psi putting down 175hp with a 11:5 air/fuel. It doesnt seem like a good to tune the car with a S-AFC since you can only tune by rpm. Well, when the guy was driving the car home from getting tuned, the boost spiked to 10psi. Before he could even make it back home, he lost compression in 3 cylinders.
So the engine was running 10psi on a 6psi tune. Turbo + Running lean + Stock cast pistons =

I finished pulling off the head, and this is what I found

275hp & 306tq - 1999 2.2 ohv

I will get his stuff fixed up. I am putting in another stock engine, but with ARP headstuds thicker Cometic headgasket, and a SPEC stage 3 clutch. He might even have a built motor ready in a few months

now that is some nice carnage

that is pretty scary that it happened in almost the same spot on 3 cylinders

sucks that it happened , but good and better things will come of it

Re: Blew my engine...

Yea, all 3 of them broke in about the same spot. On the same side as the intake valve. I am wondering if it was running so lean that the piston rings expanded and put too much stress on the ringland.

Adler wrote:I am wondering if it was running so lean that the piston rings expanded and put too much stress on the ringland.

This is where the FMU would have to shine....................

See in Adlers friends case.... the car blew up because the SAFC was tuned for 6 psi and his turbo spiked to 10psi..............
if there was an FMU ...... the ratio of (psi of boost/ fuel pressure) would have just raised and the AFR would have been relatively the same!............

Ya that was DEFINITELY a BAD idea to tune a TURBO car base SOLELY on RPM.................
that would be MUCH easier to do on a s/c car.... obviously because of the more linear boost pattern seen with a s/c car.

and I think Adlers diagnosis of the cause is BANG ON.............(unlike my spelling).......

So Cory........ Might want to make sure everything within your fuel system is okay ........ because if yours broke in roughly the same fashion..... you should use adlers example and learn from it ....

just an idea !! good luck !

Re: Blew my engine...

And you know the bad part, there was actually a Vortec FMU on the car. The shop who tuned the car told David, the owner of the car, that the fmu was making it run too rich. So they unhooked the fmu and tuned it only on the S-AFC. I figured that they would have known that it was a bad idea to only tune this turbo car with a S-AFC. And this is a well known shop...their car has been in many magazines, first uni-body Honda in the 9s, very popular in the NHRA Sport Compact series, big sponsors, etc....

Oh well, you live and learn.

BTW, the next thing on the list for this car is a fmu. 200hp on stock internals, here we come.

Re: Blew my engine...

Wow..............

an FMU making it run too rich............all that means is the guy that owns the shop was relying on the SAFC to give fuel up top...... and pull it down low.......and didn't tune it and get "base" numbers with the FMU helping out before he started @!#$ with the SAFC...................... WOW.... AGAIN BAD IDEA........

Good story adler..

Someone correct if I'm wrong here but isn't high 12's low 13's a/f ratio a little lean for a boosted motor without any timing adjustments?? Also what octane were you using??

I'm not picking a fit, just curious as I would like to make atleast 225 whp out of a 2200 myself without sending pieces of metal out the exhaust.

............super 60 on its way
