I attempted to swap out my rear factory speakers with some sony 6x9's but i can't get the rear deck off, i took out the push pins behind the seat but it still feels stuck, i ended up ripping a fingernail back, got pissed and gave up. how do i get it off? it looks like i'll have to take the entire rear side panel off just to swap some speakers? that can't be right.

Did you remove or atleast lossen the trim surround?
“Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that’s even remotely
true.
Cannon fodder is my daddy.
I have a 1998 Z24. You will need to remove everything from the back to get that back deck out and access t the speakers.
1. Remove lower bench seat.
2. Remove back rest of bench seat ( part that flips down and gives access to trunk.
3. Remove both left and right side panels. Be Careful with these. They have metal snaps that go into the metal body of the vehicle. Also, you will have to remove the clothes hanger hooks to get the panels off.
4. You have already removed the push pins so just slid out the rear deck.
You now have full access to te rear speakers. When I did mine the first time, I didn't cut the carpet from the deck. Recently, I had a loose wire and had to remove all that stuff again. It's a pain. I cut the carpet on the rear deck this time and to me the sound is alot better without the carpet on.
Time wise it should take about 10 minutes to get the stuff out.

RIP Specks
you will need a large torx head to get the seatbelt bolts off .. from the factory there is blue loctite on those bolts

oh my gosh i gotta dissasemble the entire back of the car to change some speakers? what were they thinking! so you're saying take the entire back seat off?
Bandit
^ Yes. It's a pain in the @##.
You even have to *bend* the rear deck cover slightly to get it out. Just dont bend it too much.
I don't think you need to take off the seatbelt bolts though IIRC.
other then the push pins, i just removed those child seat connector things, they are what actually hold the thing down. Oh, and fold the back seat down, why the hell would you take it out? take the old ones out, drop the new ones in, lay on your back and connect the wires. it takes maybe an hour. also, depending on your speakers, you may have to cut spots out in the rear deck to accomodate them, i did.
Nate wrote: Oh, and fold the back seat down, why the hell would you take it out?.
Because it takes literally 3 seconds to take out the backrest if you have a fold down seat) and you have waaaay more room to work if you have it out. It's a pain trying to kneel on it with it folded down.
oh, well thanx everyone, i'm going to give another crack at it when i get some time. there wouldn't happen to be a place with step by step and pics to removing it is there?
Bandit
You don't have to remove the rear side panels! Just take of the plastic child seat belt retainers, lower your back seat, take of those 2 plastic covers then pull on the deck and bend it slightly to get it out, may have to jiggle it around but it'll come out.. 10 minute job max. Do not take off your side panels unless you like wasting time.
oh ok, that sounds better. i might get on it tomorrow then thanks!

Yeah, the only reason I'd ever take out the entire back is if it were glassed.
