To get access to the wire you need to get the cover off of the steering column. The one where the hazzard flasher sticks out. There are three bolts on the bottom of the cover I think they are 8mm. Take them out and pull apart the cover, the cover is two pieces held together with clips (you can pull off the top before if you want). The wire you are looking for can be yellow or brown in color depending on the year of your car. Newer ones have a yellow wire running to the ignition key cylinder. The wire is attachted right to the ignition key cylinder. Just unplug your battery before you splice it. This is the simplest way to get at the wire and you can route the wiring to anywhere on the I/P.

Oh yeah you gotta disable passlock before you can use a push button start other than that I really don't know too much else on doing a custom start button on a J.

Good luck

thank god I have posted this Q before with no reply. also I thought that you didn't need to worry about the pass lock as long as you have the key in.

If your gonna keep the key in then no worries.

Anyone else care to fill in on this question?

I am sure someone has done this before, I may want to in the future.

You'll have to test it to find which one is the starter wire...

If your test light isn't broken- and you have it properly grounded...
When you are probing the starter wire- it won't do anything until you crank the motor... The starter wire in your vehicle is yellow..

All the push button does it throw 12 volts to the starter-- If the key is not in the ignition, and you didnt bypass passlock is anyway, the car will turn over- then die right away.

Your key will have to be in the ign for it to work- which is why I dont understand why anyone would want it.

BTW- you live in K.O.P? I live right down the bottom of 476...
