Horn
Thursday, April 21, 2005 5:47 AM
I have a 2001 cavy and i am trying to get my horn working. Where is the actual horn located under the hood, and how can you test to see if it is bad. And does anyone have any pictures of all the wiring behind the airbag i am trying to replace everything and i am not quite sure where the black neg goes for the horn. if anyone could help with anything it would be appreciated. along with if the horn is bad how muc hdoes one cost or did it cost to get it installed.

There are a lot of things to check before you start rippin at your wires.

Horn is in the front bumper, passenger side.

And uhh... Do you have a reason for posting this in two forums or do you just feel like being an ass and getting one locked?

So yes the horn looked shot it was all caked in rust, and really didnt look fuctional, so i bought a new horn. but i really feel it isnt grounded right. The fuses were checked and everything was checked. But behing the air bag there is positive and negative on both sides i am not sure where that black negative goes if anyone has anyidea please let me know. And the reason it was in both forums cause not everyone reads everything, and yes it is deemed a nono but i want to get my damn horn working before i need it inspected

Your first problen is that you said your horn is rusty... ummm... they're plastic.

Second problam.... Why are you try to find wires behind your dash, INSIDE YOUR CAE to wire a horn, when there are wires out by your bumper already...?

Use the wires that are laready there and already outside your car...
A) They work
B) They're in the right spot
C) You're dumb
D) Check polarity
E) Make sure fuse is the right size for your new horn
F) Get a new hobby if you cant even wire a horn

First off sandstorm why are you such an ass.
And yes the horn is plastic but on the back of it might be a surprise to you but it is metal, the new horn is bought right from the dealer so the fuse is the right one, the new horn is also listed as not having specific polarity, and when did i say i was touching any wire behind my dash i was replacing everything behind the airbag, because i was putting my new steering wheel on. So why dont you do me a favor and kiss my ass. and if your so knowledgable why dont you giv me some advice that is actually good, not just smart ass comments

I hate to tell you this but gm wired their stuff the way they did for a reason...because it worked.

And saying that your horn "looked shot it was all caked in rust" makes us think Why is the horn rusting when its plastic. Be a little more specific and maybe people won't think you're a moron and will give you some help.

I learned a lot in the last few days so i'll try to help.

ok the horn wire on the steering wheel is on the upper cluster plugin its the only black wire there (at least on my 2.2L) that should be the only one that you need to tinker with.

normal horns dont have polarity they simply require a ground and a positive connection, thus on the back of the horn you can hook the positive wire to either side and it wont make a difference in the world. yes the back is metal and in fact my entire horn is metal however the front is painted black.

i'm not sure what steering wheel you're trying to put on there so i dont know how the horn will connect to it, but all you're doing is making a circle from the battery to the horn to a button/switch and back to the battery. the horn button will normally not allow the circle to complete thus your horn will not sound all the time, when you push the button in the circle is completed and the horn sounds.

go to autozone and spend 20 bucks on a chiltons manual for your car it has all the cars wireing diagrams and that should help quite a bit.

^^^ Most horns use the metal frame of the horn (used to mount it) as one of the terminals. This most obviously must be ground.
