Umm... no idea why not but my dash lights (for MPH, RPMs, etc) and my HVAC lights aren't coming on. I don't know exactly which fuse it is, if that is the problem, in my '98 Z but I pulled out any that may seem a bit related and all of them looked fine.
I just noticed it tonight. The only major change lately has been a new headunit which I installed Sunday. Could that somehow have been the cause? After I got off work tonight the headunit was sorta hanging out of the dash because I never actually screwed it back in when I installed it and it was playing for like two seconds before shutting off and then it would turn back on and repeat. I pulled over and pushed it back in and it played fine.
Any ideas?
well a headunit falling out sounds like a problem to me lol
id check all the wiring in the back and make sure its still kosher
Eh? Screw that. I just pry that damn plastic peice thing back to get the headunit out. I'd have to take that whole thing off to get a good look which means taking the damn dash peice off... too much work for some stupid lights. They only tell me how fast I'm going at night.
hmmm... funny. the same thing happened to me? although i don't know the exact cause of it, mine is back to working now.
i was tinkering with the hvac lights, trying to get blue l.e.d.s in there instead of the crappy amber colored ones. i thought i had everything wired up, and when i went to turn on the lights, none of them worked. not the cluster or the hvac or behind the radio buttons or anything. i went to bed that night scared as hell. woke up the next morning, tried the lights again, and they worked!
i thought maybe they just lost all power, so you might have to drive your car around for a little bit, maybe that'll get some juice flowing through the wires. otherwise the only other thing i can think of that i did is wait like 24 hours or so.
hopefully everything will come out fine. good luck!

"They say hard work pays off... well then why the hell doesn't it pay off for me?"
It's been 24 hours... I don't know how long it's been like that either. I have no cluster lights or HVAC lights but my headunit lights up. Could it be something with the harness?
I got pulled over tonight... apparently I have no taillights either! I thought I was getting pulled over for speeding ('cause I can't tell how damn fast I'm going) but she said my tails were out. I explained that my cluster and HVAC were out as well so she let me go but made me drive home with my hazards. I was on my way up to the Sinister J's meet, too. Sucks balls.
Did you use a wiring harness for the CD player, or did you hack out the factory stereo plug?
Are your connections soldered together and heat shrunk, or did you twist wires together which may have come apart and are shorting out on metal?

Nope. I went out and bought a new harness connector. Sat there for an hour soldering and heat shrinking each wire together. That's all good.
I found out I didn't check my "Exterior Lights" fuse... I didn't know that controled the cluster and HVAC lights as well. One mini 20A fuse is all it took.
so you blew a fuse....who would have thought!!

Well, that's what I thought but I checked the logical ones! I didn't know the cluster and HVAC were linked to the exterior (in other words, taillights) lights.
Good, easy fix.

Ahhhhh....the search button works!
Exact problem and replaced the exterior fuse and I'm golden again!
Didn't know that controlled the cluster/HVAC either!
Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?
i had that problem...but one of the LED's i installed in my HVAC off a relay from a guage cluster wire that only had voltage when the lights were on...the LED shorted, and i lost all my bulbs. took me several days before i thought of it as the possible cause!

My cluster and HVAC come on sometimes but are off most of the time checked all the fuses that i read about ie. cluster. instrument panes HVAC i checked every fuse in the box does anyone know what is wrong with my car?
I have the exact same problem, but my fuse keeps blowing. No idea why. If urs keeps blowing, and you find a solution, please post back.
There's a thin gray wire in the radio harness, that controls the illumination on the stock deck.... but DO NOT use it for illumination input on an aftermarket deck.... your HVAC, dash and possibly other lights will shut off.
Make sure that thin gray wire is not attached to anything... tape it off... don't ground it either.
Use the thicker BROWN wire for illumination. Fuse it, just to be safe.
My car is bone stock i have not installed anything all the fuses in the whole panel are good but cluster and HVAC lights will not work?
