/rant Damn GM engineers what were they thinking?
Saturday, April 09, 2005 10:12 PM
I went to install my new set of Pioneer 6x9s today in the rear. I dropped the old stock speakers and pulled out the particle board. Got my template, positioned it perfectly over where the stock holes were cut for the oem speakers. Made the cuts, got it back up and mounted my 6x9s on top with the grills, then looked at it.....
WTF OMG the damn F'N holes are off center!!!
They were never centered to begin with, and to make things worse even if I had centered them I would have been cutting the crap out of that metal piece above the trunk just so they can drop into it. What a pain in the butt.
So they are installed, but looking like crap and driving me nuts, its clean looking, but just not right.
I guess Im going to have to fabricate a whole new piece, an then do some cutting if I want it to look right.
Anyone know if there is somebody who sells a after market rear deck for 6x9s? Maybe fiberglass. If not Im probabally going to build my own mold, something I could do but don't have time for right now.
Damn GM Engineers, what were they thinking.... again!
I will post pics tomorrow people who want to see what this looks like.

i learned that when i cut the holes in the rear deck...i started with a small hole, put the deck back on and cut away at it while it was still on top. however, they got robbed that way. literally. do yourself a favor. i got another rear deck from a junkyard for 10 dollars. go there, buy another rear deck, and DONT CUT IT.

Thanks for the advice, I was thinking about that too, they look damn ghetto looking, and I wanted to get a different grill to go over them, but because they have the mid/high range tower I doubt anything would fit.
The only other way to mount them would be to drop them under the metal and drill freaking holes, thought about this to begin with, more P.I.Da.A.!!!

Why drill holes? You can here stock speakers though the deck, whats the differance with aftermarket?

The stock speakers mount with a plastic bracket which does not fit on the aftermarket speakers, so you would have to drill holes to bolt the speaker under the metal deck.

It would have cost maybe 30 dollars to have an engineer take an extra half hour to design the darn holes to be centered.

Here they are in all their ghetto fabulous glory!

actually i think the engineers got it right by hiding the things under the rear deck. seeing 6x9's in the back window is something u saw in the 70's. if u like them visable its your car, but you cant expect everything to be perfect, thats what we have tape measures for.

uhh...i have those EXACT speakers...and mine dropped right in...i used the stock screws instead of the ones that came with them tho....and daaaamn man, your car is gonna get jacked or broken into (at least, you've put yourself at a MUCH higher risk of it) with those nice pioneer's showing...maybe the GM guys figures that it really doens't matter what you can't see....at least in terms of speaker placement, ya know?

yea i just stuck my 6x9 kickers in the stock plastic bracket (it has like 3 differnet mounting holes in it which i thought was pretty damn nice of the GM engineers) and put the rear deck carpet over them so the pesky theives dont target my car more than they already do

Im working on building a fiberglass mold for the entire rear deck so there will be two pods angled out and the hole speaker cage will drop down in it.
Yes the speakers drop right in on top if you want them to rest on the back side of the speaker rather than the back of the base of the speaker, otherwise you would have to port the holes out more.
The wonderful particle board with perforated holes does wonders for letting the highs get out.

Hehehehe, I MADE mine fit

They're kinda mutilated right now, but they work and are still hiding under the carpet.
