neon lights problem

I'm trying to wire my interior neon lights and my instrument panal to come on when I open my door. I found the wire that puts my instrument panal on but I don't know were to look for the one that puts my dome light on when I open my door. Where should I look for that?

you wanna go under the dash, basically if there is a panel underneath take it off. Then go on the internet get the wiring codes for a cavalier/sunfire whichever you have, i doubt they change between them. Then find the right wire that controls the domelight output, splice into it. Better to take some of the wire off by stripping it then wrap the other wire around it and preferably sauder them together if you cant sauder then electrical tape them. If you can sauder them though it is highly recommended.

where do you go on the net for the wiring codes?

I found my wires for the dome light on the a pillar on the drivers side and spliced into them to run my Neon relay, I had to run the hot and the ground off of it to work though, and with the dome light staying on after the door is closed it looks cool when you walk away and it goes out....I did have to put a switch on the light so it wouldn't turn on when the neon were on, and I had the neons on a switch so I could turn them off too....

I could run the neons by opening the door with the dome light on
neons by the door with the dome light off
neons by the headlight thingy (twist to turn on interior lights, 90 cav)
and then I could run the Dome light with the door and the neons off
and the dome light by the headlight knob.

if your lost, Ask and I can try to explain better.
Good luck.

I found the wires on the pillar and went there with a test light and could not find any juice in the wires. I'll try to think of something else before the weekend.

If your dome light was on, and your test light wasnt.... Test your test light and try again...

Ok, If you wanna make this easy, do this. Make a friend at an install shop, one where they do alarms. Get them to either print you a tech sheet, or tell you which wire is your door pin trigger, and where to find it. Assuming this is a positive trigger (I haven't checked), use it as your power for the lights, if it is negative, buy a relay and set it up.

find the door pin in the door, this is how the light turns on. open the door, the pin closes the circuit and grounds the wire and the light comes on. its up front by the kickpanel. there are two wires that go to the pinswitch in the door. youlle have to try both, one is a slow drain and the other one is an immeditate on and off, u want this one. run your ground from the neon to that wire, now, youlle also need to put another ground to the wire from the pinswitch on the passenger door, that way no matter what door u open, your neons will come on. this is how i originally had my neons wired up. i never cared to drive around with the neons on.
