What makes the sound? Is it the Factory headunit? Im going to swap an aftermarket head into my car and still need the door chime. Ive been having problems with my head unit and it sucks so if you want to know the problem refer to my other post about just my headunit. But if the stock headunit controls the chime is there any way i can still have it after i put in a diff one? Thanks in advance, and yes i searched.
well i dont know why you NEED chimes, but yes, the HU controls the chimes. HOWEVER you can buy a modual to install inline with your new HU so you can have your chimes.

Is there a way to disable the chimes with a stock HU?

I want the chimes because my battery went dead today because i left my parking lights on and i didnt hear it dinging at me. So that is why i would want it to be in my car still so i dont forget about it.
Where does the sound come from, I'm pretty sure it's not my door panel speakers, but maybe the frequency just makes it hard to telll. idk

it comes out the drivers side door speaker.
heres 2 ideas.. (i might try them out later this month) ... try them if you know electronics pretty well!
1) Go to the wreckers pickup a 95-99 J-body convenience center with the chime unit, find a shop manual and attach all the wires needed for it to work ex. ( power, ground, door, lights etc) they should all be the same from 95-05 (not sure though??) and you'll have chimes
2) Remove the factory radio, and take it apart completley find out what circuit controls the chime system , then seperate it from the rest of the radio ( cd player, tuner, tape, etc), then wire it up somehow, not sure if this is possible in any way but its worth a look.
right to me #1 seems more acceptable and something that might work, remember though these are just ideas and probably no one has tryed this.
Other then trial-and-error-rip-@!#$-apart-and-hope-it-works is there a way to disable the chime with the stock hu?

why dont you just try cutting the databus wire in the harness?? i cant think of any other thing that would be running through the data wire on the radio.

There's a LOT more running on that bus than the radio, the entire car runs on that bus. The radio doesn't respond to most of it, but the data still goes through there. Not to mention its not just a on/off thing for the chime, its a data signal sent in hex code similar to:
$68 $34 $10 $10
(Not an actual message to the radio, but thats what it looks like)
So if you spliced into it, and accidentally grounded it out, or sent voltage back through it, you could burn out everything from your BCM, Transmission controller, ECU, even your cluster and wiper motors.
If you really want to keep the chimes, get a T harness and relocate the stock radio to the trunk.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
But if my radio isnt working now what would be the purpose of a trunk mounted head unit? I dont even have the chime now so i see it as pointless to put my factory on in my trunk. Will that thing on that website work if i put in an aftermarket h/u?
i got a new headunit and just installed a small speaker (chime module thingy) under my dash, works fine
