well heres my question...do all 12" inch subs have the same diamater...because i am looking at making a custom box, and i would like to start making it before i go and buy the subs...so any help would be appreciated... thanxs

well to be a jack a**, 12" is 12"... but I'm not.. The diameter is different for every sub. it can range from 11 to 12.5 inches. it also depends if you want the sub recessed in the box and then you would consider the rubber surround if it is on the sub also.
It depends on the diameter of the basket. On my 15, I cut out an approximate 13 inch hole.. for my friends it was about 12.75 inch..
Also, you should shop around and at least pick out a sub and get the specs for the box you are going to build for it. If you build a box that's not within spec's of the sub, it'll not sound as good as it should/could. Different subs = different box specs

Yep I agree also, but to add on to that certain subs sound better in certain kinds of boxes. IE ported, sealed or Band Pass, but I am assuming you already realized that.
