If you have a pre-2000 car.. this doesn't apply to you
If you have a 2000+
J-Body then your factory head unit/radio/cd player/stereo/whatever is a
CLASS 2 unit. Class 2 radios are wired differently than anything most stereo installers have dealt with.. and there's a LOT of misinformation out there about them.
Here's EVERYTHING you should need to know about them:
1. If you remove the factory radio from the car.. you will lose your factory door chimes and OnStar (if you even have it). That's it! Proof.. from YOUR owners manual:
(Thanks VaBeachKevin!)
Removing the factory deck will NOT affect your airbags (it's a separate circuit entirely!), your DRLs (also separate), your cruise control (again, separate), your oil change light (you don't even have one!), your sex life (well, maybe)...
If anyone tells you otherwise.. THEY ARE WRONG! (Feel free to tell them this. Better yet... let me tell them this!)
2. If you WANT to keep your factory door chimes and/or OnStar... you need to either relocate the factory deck using a T-harness or replace the factory deck with a new module for the chimes and OnStar speaker.
3. If you don't give a crap about factory chimes.. you can buy a $15 harness and hook it up using that! You don't have to spend $100 or more on a T-harness and relocate the factory deck. Your airbags WILL still work.
Of course.. you'll also need a deck mounting kit.. and a GM antenna adapter.. and whatever harness you choose that you need.

I hope that helps some of you.. remember, don't believe everything you read... there's a LOT of misinformation out there.

Just as a side note, I did move my factory radio to the rear when I had my swapped. And my T-Harness was only 25$. Anyway thought people should know, but they installed my gear, so they probably discounted it.
I have also have a aftermarket unit, and I do not have my stock radio in the trunk or anywhere else..... I mean u lose ur chimes, oh MY GOD big deal..... if u want a aftermarket unit, do it, is worth it!!!

Where was I again?
u know, i've always seen many ppl post this, so now lekno, its time for me to rip on you
you ever notice how it doesnt say it ONLY disables vehicle chimes? it doesn't say ONLY. hence, it could disable many things, and the chimes is one of them. SO HA! IN YO FACE!
but on another note, after looking over stuff in the car, our car just uses the radio to ding the chimes. all the other stuff we dont have or use. hey wut do u expect, its a jbody lol.
Funny that... when I first removed my deck (in 2000) the GM tech's said that I'd need a bunch of modules to fix the oil light, airbags, etc... just like everyone else said.. but when I went to order those parts, they didn't exist! (Surprise, surprise!)
There wasn't even a chime module available from anyone until last year when Ventura Technologies came out with one. GM doesn't make one, as far as I know.

Will I lose my stock remote keyless entry if put in an aftermarket deck? Cause I thought that went through the radio as well, since there's a little red LED that blinks when the car is off.
Dark blue 2002 Z24, 2.4 Ltr.
Nope.. keyless entry is handled by the Body Control Module in the 2000+ models.
Will NOT be affected if you remove the factory deck!
(Mine wasn't)

good info thanks alot
This is gonna sound stupid, but I'm new at this stuff and I noticed the instructions posted were to access the gauge cluster... I was just wondering whether you have access to the stock cd player by step 7, in order to install an aftermarket deck. And if not, any extra steps?? Again sorry if this is a lame question but I don't have any experience with dash removal. Thanks.
One other thing I thought of... I've seen three different antenna adapters, METRA 40-GM20 MOTOROLA JACK TO GM MINI "BARBED" PLUG
METRA 40-GM21 GM BARBLESS RADIO TO AFTERMARKET ANTENNA
METRA 40-GM10 GM MINI JACK TO MOTOROLA PLUG
the last one is quoted as saying :
Converts GM factory antenna with mini "barbed" or "barbless" plug to aftermarket radio. Required parts when replacing factory radio.
Just wondering what the difference between these three was, and which I needed for an 00 Z.
What if I take my radio out, and crap on it? Won't I loose my left high beam??

Pahtcub, only if you have explosive diarrhea and crappy aim! (pun intended
)
Todd, go with the METRA 40-GM21 GM BARBLESS RADIO TO AFTERMARKET ANTENNA
I don't know what a "Motorola" plug is.. aside from a cell phone charger
Also.. check out
http://www.teamforwardmotion.com/tfmtech/j-body/audio/dash_removal.htm for the dash removal process. Once you're all the way thru, you'll have access to the stock deck.

Thank you John for posting the obvious, however, in 2 or 3 days when this post falls off the face of the electronics forum, people will just start asking again. What we need is to permanent attachment to the top of the list, or a "2000+ head unit install" button at the top of the page. Oh well, thanks again, and by the way, will my airbags go off if I crash into a tree while removing my head unit, crapping on it, and whistling "Yankee Doodle Dandy"?

New Sig on the way!!!
John, the step 7 I was referring to in my earlier post was from the TFM website. And the antennas I posted, I know the whole motorola thing doesn't make sense to me either, but they are all listed on partsexpress.com... so I didn't know, but if you went with a 40-GM21, I'd have to say that's what I need, since we both have 00 Zs.
Americon yes it will but only if you whistle, so either don't whistle or try a different song.
