alternator issues

sooo, my alt is not working properly, and my battery died on me during rush our on the busiest road in the city. haha, I thought people were going to kill me. fun times...

It is only a 2 year old alternator, 160 amp rebuilt. Can it be fixed by anychance and save me money opposed to buying a new one. What seems to be the problem is the bolt the positive terminals attach to is loose, it wiggles and can slide in and out a bit. The external bolt is as tight as it will go. it's like it needs to be tightened from the inside. anyone have a problem like this before?

Im wondering what i should do about this. I will have an aprox 2000w system running and 2 batteries. So what kind of alternator am I looking for. If I can avoid spending $500 I would be very happy. I was thinking about that GM large case swap someone posted up here a while back. Would that be sufficient if i cant fix my existing alt?

You're going to need a new terminal post probably. Open it up, http://www.springhillautoelectric.com/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=15 and shop there.

Search local alternator shops, I bet they can pull it and fix that for fairly cheap. If when working properly, it kept voltage up, chances are you don't need a whole new alt.

and Lanman, is it simple to replace the terminal post or would it need to be professionally done?

if you have torn into a case before it's not bad.

What does the cars voltage drop too when just starting?

Not on dash, with a real voltmeter? any idea?

really if you you are only getting 11.4 volts while it is running you need an alternator.

well its a new battery, and i had it tested and its good. I think its just the alternator is not charging the battery at all. So everying is being powered by the battery and causing its voltage to drop. I took out the alternator and im going to order a new terminal post for it.

and the car runs with the new battery in it. just doesnt seem to be charging. When the car was running I tried disconnecting the negative terminal from the battery and sure enoguh the car shut off. So its gotte be a problem with the alt.

id take it to an alternator repair shop and have it look at and tested. you may replace the post and find out on the highway that the post wasn't the main problem. get it tested.
