Trunk Sealed Setup
Tuesday, August 11, 2009 9:47 PM
So Im continuing to add to the saga that is my new threads recently. Im pondering another setup for the current gear. Im trying to maximize the output of what I have now as I have no money for more power for now. This thing of sealing the trunk off is looking mighty nice. So im curious. How would I do this? Im thinking a normal box with a trim plate that butts up against the opening into the trunk. But I would like to retain my back seats. So how much ass would it sound like to have the seats up like this. I think Id have enough clearence with the space between the seat and sub at full excursion. So give me your opinions etc guys.

when sealing it up having the seats there is fine, but dont forget you have holes all over the rear deck tha need sealed and also behind your side panels under your windows there are large holes that have to be sealed as well.

lots of expandable foam for the really out of reach holes.

i would love to do this, but i really like having my sub in the trunk, im not sure if i turned it around and sealed it off it would sound better or not, i dont want any distortion or anything like that so idk i owuld go for it if you wanna try it, you could always put it back the other way if it doesnt work out.

If I do it im going to attempt to seal off the deck with a piece of MDF rather than just packing my car full of foam.

i was talking about the vents for the trunk..... and its gunna be hard to seal that off completely with mdf and silicone, theres so many little nooks and crannies. expandable foam is great for that.

I mean Im going to use the MDF for the mahority of it but Ill use foam for the gaps. I just dont want my entire deck filled with foam.

Probably not. I dont have any time once school starts back up. im just kicking around many ideas I have for next summer or Christmas break when I have time and money.

its not bad, i used mostly small pieces of mdf cut to fit over the holes with silicone to seal it up. almost every hole can be done that way pretty easily. only more time consuming part was making a fiberglass bowl type shape to cover up where the trunk arm attachment pieces come up thru the rear deck.

Oh thats gonna suck to do. I cant fiberglass to save my life.

I took care of that by glassing my rear deck cover and carpeting it.

I would do that but Im trying to retain the stock look of everything. Im a street camo kind of guy.

you could always just glass it, then just cover it in stock material and it would look exactly the same. but wouldn't be as sealed as actually sealing up the holes.

That's what I did. It looks semi stock (other than the 8 inch woofers in the deck, the extra carpeting around it seals better around the sides n'at.

my trunk is sealed complete with MDF and about 5 or so cans of expanding foam. although most of them were wasted waiting on spots to dry to see where to spray next. Watch out for expanding your panels. My trunk lid slightly buldged. Once everything was set I coverd entire car with two layers of Dynamat X-treme.

Car sounds like a tank on the outside if you tap the panels. I run 2 Hypnotic 15" ZEN's in the trunk powered by 2 Hypnotic 1200d's. Before the car was noisey when driving. Now it's absolutley quit and as far as the audio, you would never know 2 15" subs are hammering in the trunk.

Over all there is probably 8 bulk packs of dynamat x-treme in the car. Reason being??? I worked in a ghetto shop where half my customers wanted to be heard a block away. They'd see my little sunfire in the parking lot with 2 15's and say damn i bet that car sounds like it's falling apart. We'd take them out and with windows up use remote and turn it up. They'd be like whats the point?? I can't really hear it. Then they'd sit inside and always give some smart comment like rich white boy's are crazy. I'd explain that's why they all had their $h!t stolen and mine's still in the car.

I do have to say though, with all the money spent on sound deadening I did loose close to 2db. 2db is ridiculous. I started off just trying to seal off the truck from air leaks like you and got well carried away in the long run. And right now truck looks like something from NASA with all the foil and lights with a few random wires. You may also find that by sealing off completly the trunk is harder to shut as well as the doors, as there is no where for the air to excape.

^^you just need to seal it from the cabin not the entire car.

plus you used way too much sound deadener. 1 layer is plenty

I disagree with this statement.
on big, flat surfaces, 1 layer of extreme may not even been CLOSE to enough to properly damp that surface. deadening isn't simply an all or nothing thing, some panels need multiple layers. and if going for SQ, the deader the better.

I've had friends lose dbs when deadening as well. if building for the meter, best way to deaden is one piece at a time with testing. LOL, I simply wouldn't have the patience.

Both. Like how its set up.

thanx unholy for defending me. My system was built with a little SQ in mind. And multiple layers are needed to dampen a panel to take out the panels resinance. Even though you put a peice onto a panel that panel still gives off a vibration ie. resinant frequency. The interior of my sunfire is a dead zone. If you are just trying to seal trunk from rest of car then a layer would be fine.

unholy and bret have it right, i have a minimum 2-3 layers on almost every surface, over 330 sq. ft. of damping used not to mention a few cans of spray on deadoning and foam acoustical absorbing pads. you can never have to quiet a car.

sundown fire, i'll try and dig up some pics.

tell you this right now. built a box for my single dd 3512 and sealed it off from the trunk. i pushed the box all the way forward and used mdf on the sides and then used foam all around and then made wood trim plates to cover both sides plus top. i played it on the meter and was complete garbage.. way toooo much cancellation so if your going to seal it off, push it as far back as you possibly can. right now with same setup but different box, (firing backwards with a 49 square inch vent, my max is a 144.98 i may try to seal it off again but by pushing it all the way back.
