Looking to purchase new subs/amp
Saturday, January 10, 2009 12:55 PM
I'm looking to grab a set of subs and possibly an amp. I'm just not sure on what i should be looking at wattage wise. I want something that sounds good with a good bass behind it, but not where you can here me coming from blocks away. How many watts should the sub be and should i be looking at an amp first since that is what will power the subs? I see some subs say 1000 watts but then theres a RMS of like 300 watts. Using that example for 2 subs at that, what kind of amp should i be looking to get to get plenty of power to these subs? I'm just confused on watts and rms. Also, do any of you have any suggestions of a good subs and amps?

rms wattage is the amount of power that the sub can take continuously.
the 1000 watts youll see on some subs is the peak wattage, which is the amount of power the subs can take for very short periods of time.
you will want to pay more attention to rms wattage when looking at subs and amps.
which to find first is really up to you tho.
your gonna hear a lot of opinions on what to buy so if you could put a budget up, that is usually helpful, and maybe go to a shop and pick out something you like.
but i would say you would be good with a couple alipne type-r's and a hifonics amp, and a box built specifically for those subs.

"I did it because I wanted to see what it would look like. You should be greatful that I even told you that it would look good. If your to dumb to use photoshop and change the color of your own car then you don't need to see it changed. I'm not going to give my work away. I'll sell the pic to you though for $15."-Adam Kalin

good info, i've skimmed through the sticky but didn't see much. I've heard good things about MTX. I have a kenwood amp now and 2 rockford fosgates that are probably a good 5-6 years old. Id have to look at that amp in my trunk and see the specs on it cause i think it's in good condition and would like to just have to buy subs. Just trying to find some good info or opinions on different types of subs. What do you guys think of rockford fosgate subs? I thought they were pretty top product years ago, but have they fallen off?

im not a fan of rockford just because of their prices. but they have good quality stuff. but when your subs are around 5 years old i would probly replace them. lol but thats just me. but if you could post a budget and what you have allready that would help with suggestions. but i still like mtx for anyone that wants more bump and quality sound.
