hi, im new to this wedsite so bare with me. i have an 87' pontiac sunbird 2.0L, no turbo, automatic. and i cant seem to get it to stay running. it runs fine if i unplug the power wires to the alternator and keep the ground wire connected, but then the battery wont charge its self which is no good. also, it will stay running if i keep the power wires plugged in and disconnect the ground wire but once there both connected to the alternator the engine just dies out. i even replaced the alternator with a bran new one and get the same results as the old. im thinking it must be an electrical problem, but any ideas were?! any ideas at all might help?! so please let me know if you have anything that might help!! thank you!
never had a bird that old. but i had a 94. i had a problem similar. and mine happened to be a shorted wire in the plug for the alternator. its at least a good place to start. check and clean the plug, and trace the wires back as far as you can, see if you can find a burnt or broken wire there somewhere.. its a good place to start.
you will find more help in the maintenance or gen specific forums
