Alternator = dead ):
Saturday, January 10, 2009 1:18 PM
Ok guys, last night I started noticing unusually dim headlights, dim cluster, and my radio cutting out. Figured it was either my battery or alternator. My batter took a charge overnight, and I'm about to take it to my good ole' advance auto for a checkup. When/If I buy a new alternator, should I worry about a higher output one? Are my subs what killed this one? Any tips on getting the damn thing out lol? Running dual 5 guage power to a Hifonics 1505D that's pushing 900W RMS at 2 ohms. Thanks for any wisdom

There's a thin line to be crossed, when the upgrades to your vehicle increase your chance to get tickets by an amount exponential enough to stop worrying and build the fastest, loudest car you can.

Worry about a higher output alternator ONLY IF YOU WANT IT. It's not going to make any difference as far as how long the alternator lasts, your subs are not creating that much draw.

Ok, $150 later I'm the proud owner of a new 105 Amp alternator with a lifetime warranty Now, since I'm this far I'm gonna do the Big 3 upgrade right now too. I've run into a problem though, there's some kindof box with terminals and connections under my intake manifold... What is this?!?!? I'm contemplating running two wires from my alternator, the stock one which runs through the "Box" to my battery, and my 2 Gauge running from my alternator to my battery. Anyone see a problem with this?

Thanks!

Ok, the 5 gauge was free so I used it, I'm a broke ass college kid lol.

And way to just come on and hate, offering no input.

There are several J's on this site running 1000rms on the stock alternator with minimal problems. If you're still having voltage issues, dimming, etc. go with a high output, but otherwise like I said, it's up to you. Not sure why thats a "crock" but whatever.

What size are the amps fuses?

Dual 60's stick in my head, but I'm not sure. I'll check in the morning, it's too chilly to go out now lol

I was also considering adding an additional battery. I have a 1 farad cap (got it for ten bucks, don't murder me cause I had a cap before the Big Three ) that I bought with the amp, and was considering upgrading to 0AWG wire and adding the cap and an additional battery before I up the wattage to 1500 RMS. Is this gonna be needed? Or will I be wasting my money?

Batteries will let you run your stereo for longer after the engine has stopped, and with a high output stereo thats a good idea.

I'm pretty sure 1500WRms is going to take more than 105amps. With your aspirations of a big stereo, it seems like a high output alternator will be due in the future.
