Alternator Idea
Thursday, January 01, 2009 11:26 PM
So I was discussing my system with my dad today which is odd because he hates it. And I was telling him how my lights dim etc. I got a Yellow top two days ago and it helped but theres still some dimming but he thinks I should upgrade my alternator if it keeps doing it after getting my new amp. So we got an idea going about getting a stock alternator from a different car with a higher output and using that as opposed to buying a 300 some dollar high output one. I might be able to get my stock one rewound but I need to talk to a guy my friend knows about details on it. As i searched all 15 pages of old threads I found one saying that an alt from a Chevy truck would fit on my 2.2 OHV. That would be the large case alt as opposed to the small case on now. So has anyone done or tried this with any success or am I just making ideas again? Also whats the idling amps on the large case Chevy truck alternators?

lol

but anyways i was told by a few people that the large case gm units will fit on our cars (2200) with just a longer bolt. if this is right i would go for a ad244 alt of a truck/suv.

If you get your alternator re-wound you will prolly loose idle or low rpm performance.

I have an excessive amperage alt that im trying to sell, the idle output is not to great...(its good while its cold) but at about 2000rpm i hold 14.6 volts.

i had it in the classifieds but i cant find it now, im selling it for $175 if interested

I have a big case GM alternator, bolted right up to my 2.2, but the wiring might be different. I'm using an external voltage regulator on mine, and it does 250 amps.

Reading my profile > than you.

I already have one.

Lanman- is that 250 at idle or rev? Can you give me an idea how you wired it?

Crap forgot to mention that my power issues are at idle or low rpms. I wont get any dimming til i sit at idle.

Idle. It does a little more at 2000 rpm, around 275.

Try removing the capacitor, do the big 3 first. What amp are you running?

How my alternator is wired:

Alternator with 1/0 going to battery from post. Wire sticking out of alternator (stator) goes to inside my car to the external voltage regulator. Ignition and ground also go to it, and keep it set at 14.7 volts.

I have the Big 3 done with 4 gauge. I've only got a little Sony Xplod amp til I order my Sundown next week. Its like 200 RMS which is whats concerning me for when I step up to 1000 RMS. I was going to take my cap out today but I can't get into my garage right now cause my dad grinding on something. Is the belt pulley the same size? Or will I need a bigger belt? What did you pull yours off of?

I've had dimming issues at idle, which led me to go to a high-output alt. As many will tell you, a HO output alt will often exacerbate problems with low rpm output -- which was definitely true for me much to my frustration. My solution to the problem was a combination of undersized alt pulley and using HPtuners to bring my idle speed up to about 900 rpm. The alt really screams at high revs, which will probably shorten it's life -- but output is solid.

what concerns me is you have dimming lights with a 200 watt amp. there are those of us here on the board pushing over 1200-2000 watts on the stock alternator with no dimming whatsoever. i'd start looking into your electrical system first before you start purchasing things. maybe go have your alt checked, most places do it for free.

Thats what I was thinking that my alternator is dying slowing because I didn't use to do this for the longest time. I've had systems in it for almost a year and it didnt start doing it til my 15 was in which is also around the same time that my Pyramid amp self destructed. Which may have shorted or hurt something else. I think it caused a ground loop somewhere because I've been having hellish ground loop interference on my sub. I've checked all of my grounds and replaced my RCAs because I though maybe those got messed up when it failed. But I cant seem to find anything bad. Could that in any way be linked because maybe something in the electrical system is getting a poor ground and causing poor voltage flow?
