2000 sunfire front speaker question
Tuesday, July 29, 2008 8:36 PM
I'm buying this car tomorrow and I want to upgrade the 4x6 speakers. Will the 5.25 or 6.5 speaker fit in there without any cutting or mods? I don't want to epoxy or change anything. I know I would need an adaptor but hopefully you guys have tried it and know if it fits good or not. I want factory door panel to still look stock. Thanks

I did a search but most of the pics are old and links do not work anymore

Depends.

5.25 and 6.5 come in (more or less) two sizes, American and Japanese. Japanese are smaller and will definitely fit our doors (with the adapter plates) while most Americans will, but some are much deeper and therefore will not.

By Japanese/American, I mean made FOR Japan/Amer. Cars, not MADE IN Japan/Amer.

Yeah it really has to do with the speakers you are planning on getting. You need to look at magnet size (diameter) and mounting depth in particular.nI'm not sure on the exact parameters you need to stay in to still fit stock, but I know there's a good selection of speakers that will fit using just an adapter. Be wary when you make the adapter that this won't put the speaker too close to the door panel; you don't want your cone or surround bouncing off of it. I would recommend about a 1/2" adapter, but this again will vary from speaker to speaker.

ok thanks for the help. Do you guys have different speakers in the door? What do you have that will work? I was thinking some kicker or mb quart 5.25 or 6.5. I will probably look into 5 1/4 since it will probably not be as deep

I have Infinity 6010CS Compnent speakers up front. (6.5"). That particular model is discontinued, but I'm sure there is an updated version available. The mounting depth was no problem, and my window clears nicely. I used plastic adapter plates that I found on eBay, but was forced to modify the door panel to accommodate the woofer and grill plate. This consisted of some cutting and creative use of black caulking, but someone more crafty could probably have done much better. I also mounted the tweeter components, which attached to the door panel near the outside mirror adjustment.

eBay Speaker Adapters

Those are the same adapters I bought and I couldn't be happier with 'em.

I don't know the difference, if there is one, between Sunfire and Cavalier door panels but Alpine SPR-17C 6.5" Coaxials fit under mine with manual windows. There's maybe 1/4in. of space between the speaker and the door panels but they fit and sound great. I'm looking into components right now but the ones I have now certainly get the job done.

well just to play it safe the car you have is a sunfire right? Would you sell the adapter and speakers since we know they fit?
