i was wondering where can i get the 300 amp fuse that i need to do the big 3? I was wondering cuz i have really bad dimming and i am planning an upgrade to the system i wanted to make sure that i didnt mess up my alternator or overload my electric system.
you only need a fuse that large if your running big boy power wire

ok thanks wysiwyg i wasnt sure if i could use that kind of fuse.
i thought it was like the glass one that you use when u install the amp for subs.

they dont make 300 amp agu fuses as far as i know.

that was what i was thinking when i didnt see them.

Im guessing your running a 0 gauge wire, and a 275 amp alt?
i just have the stock alternator in the car
The ANL fuse is for the wire between the Alt and the battery. If your running a stock alt with a 300 amp fuse, the fuse is never gonna blow, because the stock alt only put out 105 amps. When the regulator on the alt dies out, amperage will spike to a max of 130 amps. This is why i was wondering.
so what u are saying is that i cannot even do the big 3 upgrade?
since 150 amp is the fuse for the 4 gauge i cant even do the big 3 can i?

um, that's not why the fuse is there.
the fuse is there in case of a direct short to ground. Saves your car from burning to the ground.

True, however if his alt can only produce so many amps, if he has a 300 amp fuse, the fuse is never gonna blow.
jbodycavalier03, doesnt understand that even a 4 gauge wire withh the 150 amp fuse is still the big 3.

when your wire shorts direclty to ground...your entire battery is going to discharge as fast as it can (WAY more then 300 amps)
The fuse is on the battery side..and protects your wire from asploding if that were to happen.

Nope. Ive grounded out my battery before and never blew the 150amp fuse, it welded the wire to the chassis but did not blow the fuse.
4 gauge can do 125 amps, i believe...
so, if you are doing the big 3 with 4 guage, use 125 amp fuse.
Correct me if I am wrong, the purpose of the fuse is to blow if the amperage going through the wire is higher than the rating of the fuse. This happens to protect the electrical system from being destroyed. So if the regulator fails and the alternator puts out a max of 130 amps then should you not have a lower amperage fuse between to alternator and the battery than the max 130 the alternator puts out? 60 or 70 amps sounds like a good safety zone. Now from the battery to the amp, if you are using one, if the system is gounded out and can dump 300 amps in a shot, then the fuse should be rated below that value? Safely you should match at least what the main fuse for the vehicle is and not exceed that value since the discharge could blow the vehicle fuse but follow a path through the power wire to the amp and then to chasis ground? Just my thoughts. I am by no means an audio or electronics wiz but this just seems logical to me.

someone already said it. Your fuse should be rated below the maximum capacity of the wiring it's supplying. The purpose of the fuse is to protect the wiring from overheating due to carrying too much current.
Now, since it's a stock alternator rated at 130 amps, there isn't much purpose to putting a larger fuse at the alternator. the battery could be capable of discharging at a higher rate so the fuse on the battery would need to be larger (as in rated to the wire capacity).
so if i have a 2 awg dedicated wire from the alternator to the battery, how big of a fuse will i need for a 180 amp alternator?
Rollin' on question marks since 07.
