I'm thinking about buying the Alping SPR-17LS 6.5" comps, and sticking one in each door.
I also have manual windows. Am I going to run into problems here? Also, any suggestions on an amp?
Thanks!
you shouldn't run into any problems......just gonna have to make adapter plates to go from the 4x6" hole, to a 6.5" speaker, but that should be pretty easy with some scrap MDF
Hey guys, don't mean to thread-jack, but I'm doing the exact same thing except with JVC components. Wondering if there's a thread around here that shows you how to make these adapters? I tried the search, but got nothing. Just like something to go by, rather than go out and buy 1/4 MDF, and have to guess and check about where to drill holes. Also, Randy, I have manual windows, and the mounting depth on my JVC's is 46.5mm, and i don't believe I have any clearence issues, what's the mounting depth of those Alpines?
The Alpine's have a mounting depth of 59mm. I don't think that making custom mfd adapter plates is going to be too difficult. Should only take 10 mins, really.

Hmm, should fit, not sure what i measured when I had the door panels off, but i don't think it was less than 6cm. When you make those mounts, mind taking a few pics?
Sure, won't be anytime soon. Too much snow here! When I get a sunny, fairly warm day I'll get on the job and take some pics.

I found this guide to making brackets for cavy/sunfire.

I have a few questions though, where do you put the Crossover, is there room in the door for it? Also where do you mount the tweeters in a components system, my car (2003 Sunfire) has a molded, angled upwards approx 1inch speaker thing in addition to the regular speaker. I don't know how to describe this small speaker, it looks like there is a tweeter in there, but it's still stock speakers. Wonder if I could put a component tweeter in that same spot, that would be ideal.
if you're going to put in components, and alpine especially, you're going to want to "see them" or show them off. Mount them in front of the door panel so you can see them. Make a bracket behind the plastic panel. Should work great and look like
Clipzed Z24's (of course w/out the sex of suicides..haha!!
If I were to mount particle board just behind the door panel, and then screw the speakers into that, on the outside - how do I fill in the rest of the gap from the original hole? Or would the 6.5"'s cover it? I'm pretty sure it wouldnt. Like you mentioned SD, I'd like to mount them so they can be seen. It's a shame to hide Alpine
Any installation pics or tips would be great. I can figure it out myself, but help will smooth the process.

Unfortunatly, the sunfire door panels are very different then cav's and modding them like that is not really an option. you'd have to cut into a rounded off piece of molding, it would look funky. And I read that the metra plastic adapters where cheap and don't really "Seal" hole very well. I've already made my adapters yesterday too.
We put type-r 5.25" comps in my buddy's 01 GT and we had depth issues even using 3/4" MDF. We ended up needing another 1/8" to miss the glass. We also had clearance issues in the front beacuse the mids have such a long throw, we had to cut down the back of the grills and do some door panel trimming.

your going to run into some problems for starters alipine are huge (depth wise) you'll need like 3/4 inch mdf. your also going to need power windows with the mdf sticking out your window crank will hit when you try to turn it i'll send you pics tommorow it ended up costing me 600 hundred dollars all said and done 300 for windows 250 for speakers mdf supplies 50
Ya, Type-R aren't gonna fit in the stock place without moving the window channel. Darkstars (iirc) did it using washers and shifted the window channel towards the outside of the door and then you'll still need some mdf adapters.
When I went to do mine I finally said screw that and just mounted them on the outside of the panel. Not my first idea but it worked out pretty good.

Sounds like a challenge! I know the 2007 "S" versions were redesigned to have a shallower mounting depth, as opposed to the older Type-R's. I'm not too worried about that. Only worried about clearing the window crank.

...and when I say "S" versions, I mean Type-R SPR-17S, not the LS.

so if 5.25 will have a problem mounting in a sunfire door...will there be a problem with type r 6.5 in kicks, mounting depth wise?
Big plans for the '04 Fire.
All I need are is Time (sigh...)Money(sigh...)Know-how (workin on it!)
I'll be installing some Pioneer Rev's on tuesday, with a 5/8th particle board mounting plate/spacer. These speakers are 59mm mounting depth, hopefully they will fit without issue. Here's a size diagram, what do you guys think?
6.5 Rev Size Diagram
Where did you get 59mm for the Type-R components, it looks like they are actually 72mm, a full 1/2 bigger.
Doing this with 6 1/2 JVC Components (pictured below) next week, choosing to hide the speakers as showing them is a magnet for theives where I live. Mounting depth is 46.5mm, so I'm guessing I'll have no problems with windows or depth issues. I'll let you all know how it turns out!
JVC 61/2 Component System:
I got a pair of 6.5" alpines today and if it doesnt rain tomorrow im gonna put them in.
ill try to put some pic up!
I go my Pioneer REV 6.5 coax installed in my door, it was a pain in the ass. They cleared the window crank with 1/2 inch thick plywood + non-hardening modeling clay (seal/damper). The clay gave me a little more, maybe 1/8 inch more depth. However, I had to modify and cut out the inner door grill a lot. This is on a 2003 Sunfire btw, our door grill is screwed in with little plastic screws, and there's a flat plastic "Grate" behind the actual grill. I had to cut out the grate, and some extra plastic surrounding the grate or else my speaker would rub, the plastic screws that held the speaker grill to the door also "stabbed" at my speaker cone, I had to remove 2 (of 4). I also removed the stock tweeter from the door panel, and glued the tweeter grill back in. The end result is pretty nice, with the grate cut out there's a much larger "hole" for the sound to come through, the speakers also look nice when looking though the door panel grills. The rear speakers where just as big a pain in the ass too, the Piooneer REV 6x9's have a huge magnet and the basket would not clear with the stock spacer, or directly in the hole. I did not want to cut the metal, so I had to make a huge 1 1/4 inch spacer, which then had to be cut to allow the plastic molding "clips" on the rear deck to fit, then they had to be top-mounted and I had about 2 inches of window clearance to screw the spakers in, I ended up using a hex head screw and smallest ratchet I had, it took awhile to find the pilot holes and was a major pita.
I can't figure out how to edit these messages.. above I said it cleared the "window crank" what I meant was, it cleared the glass. Since I mounted speakers beneth the stock grills, the crank was never an issue.
