I would like to know from the GM electronics experts if the Airbag clockspring coil are interchangeable through out the model years on the J.
I've notice that they carry a green & white wire on most of them, but difference is the connection. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Could I just change the connector and get the same safe results?

if you are ever to get into an accident, this could lower your insurance coverage if it is spoted. in that department you want to stay 100% stock.
but as for the results, with out seeing iether of the harnesses or plugs i would say as long as there is a solid connection and no left over wires. it should work 100% the same.
I believe they are the same..just the connectors are difernt..as for keeping it stock..yellow shrink ftw!

You're right on that aspect. But if the bags deploy in a accident, I would figure the insurnce company would not investigate. No?

That's the beauty of it, I don't even have to cut the connectors. There is a lock on the connector inwhich I can slide out and out comes the wires.
My question is, is this safe... ya I really don't need the bags to deploy on me when I start the car.
GM electronic gurus chime in. Because I am seeing so far a green and white wire.

Help.
Where are the GM electronics experts at?

I've never tried swaping them, but a sir coil is just a length of wire. If you can swap the connectors then go for it. If something is wrong it will not deploy the bag, but just set an SIR code. When you start the car the SIR light flashes 7 times, this is the start up test. If it doesn't see a specific resistance from the bag it sets a code. So if you got a bad connection after swapping you'll get a light.
Thank-you. I just needed confirmation on what I thought from a person who knows/dealt with these before.

I have 2 clock springs at home. One from a 99 and one from a 2003 cavalier. I am not using either of them.
Yah, coils the same... connectors changed. I've changed connectors before, and seen the results.. they still work.
Back from the dead. I feel that this is better in this post than in a new post though. How about aligning the coil rest.? There is a big sticker letting me know I am an idiot for not reading the manual before I pulled this thing off at the yard. Hopefully I can just clock it in the same position as the one on my car now. Does any one know for sure or know if this would be in a haynes or chilton manual?
Sig'less since '02!
If I'm not mistaken, it will only go onto the column/hub in one spot... the difference is if you've got it turned an extra turn to the left or right instead of in the middle. You turn the wheel, there's no slack left... pinched wires, could be bad.
I have no idea how to set the clockspring back to the center position... and I'm pretty sure that the Haynes manual is pretty much useless on detailed stuff like that... but then again, I don't have one to read.. so..
