What to buy!What to do!
Wednesday, December 05, 2007 10:53 PM
So i have 2 rockford 10" subs and a rockford 600watt amp.
I still need to get front and rear speakers a deck and a box but i have alot of questions.
1. Is it easier to build my own box(I have the skills to build one) or is it cheaper to go buy one?
2. what would be the best deck for what i have but at the same time im only looking for something no more than $200
3.Speaker----does it matter what brand...alpine,pioneer etc...
4. dynamat the truck and doors. IS it needed???
5.what else do i need to know.... so i don't get ripped off at best buy ,future shop or visions. a
6.how much did it cost you guys to get a deck installed if you did get it done
7. do i need to re run wires for the front and rear speaker? is it an idea?

Thanks alot in advance!

1. Easy to build a sealed box, ported a little harder, and bandpass much harder. It all depends on how much time, effort, or style u want.
2. http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=300&i=500CDA9883&tp=5684 (really a preference)
3. Infinity 6x9's and make a mdf speaker ring adapter (do a search its an easy mod) put 5 1/2's in the doors.
4. Dynamat the doors around the speakers, and only do the trunk if you have a rattle IMO, otherwise it's a lot of weight and money.
5. Don't shop at best buy. EVER. www.crutchfield.com always. They will never steer you wrong, and while their prices may be a smidge higher, they will NEVER let you down.
6. Do the deck yourself, or get it done at an audio shop other than BB. Most stores in my area will install a Head unit for free if you buy it from them.
7. You should run a 4 Channel Amp for the new speakers, beleive me, its worthwhile. And yes, no wire should be run for that, it isn't hard, i ran mine in less than an hour, the cav comes apart easy.

1. It's always cheaper to build your own. With your speakers the manufacturer gives you specs on sealed and ported. Follow them.
2. Best and 200 dollars shouldn't be used in this context. You can get a decent name brand deck for that amount of money. Pick one that you like
3. Nope, just don't get a generic brand. You can do a 6 1/2 inch speaker if you wanted there with an adapter.
4. Not needed, but helps some. You have low power, you might get a little rattle. Doors is to help midbass output.
5. Learn how to do the work yourself Shop around, and you can buy from bb, cc, etc, and not strictly crutchfield like fanboy up there says.
6. For basic deck install, maybe 40 for the install plus dash kit and wiring harness. Install it yourself bro.
7. Unless you're installing an amp for your speakers, no need for separate wire runs.

Fanboy eh?

I just want him to start out on the right foot. BB, CC, Waly world, they all have sub standard practices and can't be trusted. to be honest, i get most of my stuff from ebay, but when i need something Crutchfield is my choice.

lanman elite has some good points, but can you really trust someone with a picture of what I can only assume is katie's world hoof action? 200 bucks is enough to get a quality HU....sure it won't have every bell and whistle, but for 200 bucks, there is plenty out there. 40 bucks is about right for the installation tools and Team Forward Motion has the tutorials on how to do most of the stuff u will need to do. You will need a chime box for your Cav, or get used to having a dead battery if you like to drive with your lights on. Speaker brand isn't that important, but you do get what you pay for. Just match what RMS the speaker has to an amp with the right RMS (and OHM) and you will be all set. Mount the 6x9's from the bottom, or make a back deck modification, as most don't sit it the cav brackets. Definatly learn to do the work yourself, then charge your friends when they want help with theirs.....

you dont need a chime box. you will lose your door chimes but it is not necessary ive had an aftermarket headunit in my car since it was two days off the lot without one and never had a problem with a dead battery. yes if you are forgetful and leave the lights on you can run into problems. as far as a head unit what are you looking for ipod direct connect aux in mp3 what exactly. that will be easier to help you in a decision. Speakers. its your ears you need to listen to some before you make a judgement. what sounds good to me may not be up your alley. its your car and you have to like it. As far as a box goes id rather build my own and take pride in the fact that i did all my own work then anything else. Also crutchfield is just as commercial as the best buys and circuit citys. just because you dont have a salemen pushing something down your throat doesnt mean they arent clueless once they get outside of their little book. call em up and ask them if they can fit a double din unit in a cav and when they tell you no I'll show you about two dozen cars who have it done. Even price wise they are not that great. woofersetc has them smoked.

Exile car audio has some extremely nice components out right now. The XP line is great. The Xtecs are better but more money. I am running the XP 6 1/2 components and they love power. The tweeter is one of the most detailed out there period. The 1st show out the judge was really impressed by their ability to hold together and accurately. For a head unit I would probably go with a panasonic, good features for a fair price. Dynamat is a life saver. Door rattles will absolutely drive you nutty. They can sound like a speaker going bad at times. It will greatly help the sound from all the speakers by blocking road noise and rattles. The door and the trunk is the main worries.
