dB refferences and damage to ears.

I was looking around howstuffworks (isn't it funny that when you go there to find one simple answer, you look up 30 things along the way and forget what you initially intended to go there for?) Anyway, the link is: http://www.howstuffworks.com/framed.htm?parent=question124.htm&url=http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/hearing/ruler.asp

It's kind of interesting, don't worry, there's not much to read, but it tells what can damage your ears at certain volume levels. It seems that anything 85 dB or higher can damage your ears very gradually, and anything in the 100s can damage your hearing within hours to minutes to seconds. Guess it's time to turn the subs down durring long trips, huh?

Oh, and here's the howstuffworks page on dB for further reading: http://science.howstuffworks.com/question124.htm

Given I had the time, I could get lost in that site all day, and endup with a badass headache...which will probably cause me to look up headache makeing it even worse.

most people don't assume they are recieveing hearing damage because they dont notice it. what they fail to realise the minor damage done over long periods of time is the problem. kinda like you dont really notice yourself aging on a daily basis because the changes are so slight. but if you look at a picture of yourself from a few years back you can see the changes.

That is a very good point, keep listening to volume in the 90 dB range like a lot of the medium-end drop in speakers with an amp and you'll end up like those old people who couldn't hear a grenade if it went off right in front of them. But really, that aging analogy makes a whole lot of sense, it's the same with vision, taste, and smell, they slowly fade and you don't even know it because it's gradual. So I guess the point of this is to be careful with your volume levels on your stereo, push it too hard and you're ears will blow....after awhile.

ive noticed that ive lost some of my hearing from the years of loud stereos, ive gone to quite a few concerts as well.. im only 22 and i'll betcha ive lost at least 15-20% of my hearing already.

everybody says im nuts, but i just cannot listen to music quitely, its gotta be all the way up or nothing at all. and i do that constantly, every time i drive one of my cars the stereo is cranked.

one other thing ive heard that is pretty harmful to your hearing is driving around on say the highway or interstate with the windows down, the wind noise really does the deed so ive heard. and guess what? i do this as well

lol, im hoping by the time i need some extra hearing they will have came out with some break through where you either dont need hearing aid's or they are so advanced you dont need to worry about them etc.

i know this is an old post but, isn't it different from bass and treble. your more likely to lose your hearing to high noises then to low noises like bass is that true?

that is true but most people tend to take that as meaning i can listen to bass really loud without doing any damage when its really more close to saying isnt it true that a dumptruck hitting me at 50 miles an hour would do allot more damage then a cavalier hitting me at 50 miles and hour.

I listen to my card stereo for long periods of time with bass and i have had it so that i cant hear anything and my ears hurt for like 30 seconds and i have to turn it down or it seems like i will die. its a bad habit for me and i need to learn to not do it.

i liken it to saying man i love to walk and run and climb mountains and ride bikes, while sitting there in a chair slowly cutting my legs off, it just doesnt make sence to me.

I don't think listening to a chainsaw at full throttle for 1 MINUTE will result in permenant hearing loss.

Or a snowmobile for 15 minutes...

I'm pretty sure people to it all the time.

Permanent does not mean noticeable.

It's true, but only up to a point. I have a single Infinity 10", and it's easily loud enough to cause hearing damage. Somehow I doubt those of you with multiple 12's are really going to play them quietly after reading this. One sub alone can cross the threshold of hearing damage.

I play my stereo at safe levels and I can hear down to 0dB the last time I was checked, about 2 years ago.

What really will kill your ears is going into bars. I've not gone into one that had the music at a decent level. They were all ridiculously loud to the point where you have to yell into people's ears to be understood. Every time I leave a place like that, my ears ring and I can tell I left a little bit of my hearing behind. It only happened 2 or 3 times, and never again. The whole bar scene is retarded, but that's another story. My friends keep wanting me to go with them to bars, but I tell them no for this reason alone. What good is buying $300 speakers when you don't have the capacity to enjoy them? By the way, it's the top end of your hearing >15Khz that starts to drop off first. As your hearing becomes more and more damaged, that ceiling keeps dropping, and pretty soon you can't tell a CD from FM radio.

been awile since i checked but i know around 130dbs you could go for around 30 minutes before any permanent damage was done. at like 140 the timeframe was around 5minutes or so i believe thoug don't quote me on that, just going from memory here. and just as a refrence my mustang with a single 12 being fed 120 watts was hitting at 130-135 db's
