Box issues...
Saturday, November 17, 2007 10:39 AM
Ok, i have 2 jensen XS1010s in a sealed box, i played them today and it sounds like crap up higher... kind of sounds like its gonna blow to box apart.. like the sound of hitting on wood... the only thing i could think of is maybe they required a ported box? anyone know anything else it might be? thanks

Well, i know they will distort, but i didnt think it would have a sound like that... usually when i hear distortion its just like kinda of a muffled, messed up sounds w/ the song.. but this sounds more like something with to wood on the box maybe...

Anyone?! i really need some help on this... i looked online alot.. all i found was people who built boxes too big or too small? I dont think thats my issue because the guy that had these subs before me had them in the same box, only thing i did to it was added a peice of wood in the middle to divide the 2 chambers for each sub, and sealed it, when he had it, it wasent sealed all the way and didnt have the wood in the middle, it also didnt hit highs at all.... now it hits highs but has this sound... help would be greatly, greatly appriciated, thanks

what exactly do you mean aboot hitting highs, i thought you were talking aboot a sub?

I meant the subs would never hit highs when playing until i got the chambers divided, and the box sealed.. then when i solved that, it started making this sound...

Well lets see, it did not happen until you divided the cahmber and sealed it. I think that you answered your own question there David. You need to have the box ported.

Do you know an explaination why? just curious.... and any idea how big of ports?? We have a thing for the drill to cut door knob holes in doors if you think that would be big enough? Also, is there any certaint place i would need to put it, recomendations on location of the port? can take pics of the box if needed... thanks again...

I highly doubt those subs need a port to sound... as good as they can. Maybe set your gains properly on yours amp. Make sure your box is sealed tight. Set the crossovers right, your subs shouldn't be playing "high" (maybe 80htz at the most). If after doing all these things, your subs don't sound right. Maybe you already fried your subs with improper gain settings.

you want to bump, then they will bump and hit real hard and a lot good.

Could be bottoming out the sub. Does it smell like burnt electrical yet? Turn the gain down some and thank me later.

Well, i tried turning the gains down today, i turn one of them down and leave the other one up, and it sounds normal, then turn the other one down, sounds like crap, both of them up, sounds like crap... i think it may be that the chambers arent completely sealed from each other? before i put that peice in it did it too, but the other time it looked like the other sub was working when it wasent even hooked up, i looked and it wasent moving really... but if it was just a little leak or something, it could be that its not enough air to make it move... any ideas? thanks

The problem has nothing to do with ported or sealed, it is more than likely the piece you added. How did you go about adding the piece? I'm assuming you took the top off and when you did, you either didn't secure the added piece properly or didn't put the box back together good enough. The problem with the sound itself is the box size.

When i added the peice, i took the back off, the peice i added does stick out to the back a little more, so the back peice has kind of a bow to it... not too much though... the peice i added i have 9 screws in, 3 from the back, then 2 on the other sides, then everything was sealed back up... i think size is ok.. unless its too big?? This box is big for just 2 10s..

When you added that piece and put the bow in the back, even if you think it's "not too much though", you compromised the integrity of the box and the back piece is probably vibrating like crazy causing that buzzing sound. How big is the box? Jensen recommends 0.75 cuft per sub.

Well, the box dimensions are 1' deep, 30 1/4" long, 301/4" wide... it is diveided pretty evenly in half for the chambers... I was thinking about taking some off the back of the box before so it would be a little smaller to fit as i have alot of other subs to fit... thanks for your help

I took the back off again and measured, and the chambers are 14" lenth in one, and 13 3/4" in the other.. so i dont think that would make a difference? i can trim the middle peice, and put it back in np, do you think that would solve it? keep the back from bowing at all, then completely sealed again?

I used a cubic foot calculator online and it said 6.77 cubic feet for the whole bos, which means each chamber would be about 3.385, if i did it right? Could that be whats messing it up??

Dude i'm not going to try to rag on you so please don't think that. but you need to stop doing a half a$$ed job on it. the first rule of thumb is measure 3 times cut once and when you noticed it had a bow in it then that should have been a stop sign saying i messed up i need to fix it and don't leave it, fix the problem then and there... and If it sounded good without the divider take it back out put everything back together and see how it sounds. If it sounds good leave it out if it doesn't try something else... but you have to try you can't just expect someone to be able to give you an answer on here because we cant hear it and know for sure we can't see if there are any other problems with the box. there are a lot of factors that can come into play with this and these guys have named off a lot and you have only tried to adjust the gains... the first thing i would do is take the divider out and see if that helps I mean if it worked the way it was before it should sound the same for you because if he was only hitting lows he done something right because last i remember subs were supposed to hit low's not high's

Re: Box issues...

Ok for starters, ditch that box and build a completely new one. You keep taking it apart and I'm willing to bet it doesn't seal properly, not to mention you had a piece in that bowed the back. Second, whoever built that box or bought it had NO clue what they were doing. Those subs need somewhere around a 0.75-1.0 cuft chamber each, that box is around 3 times too big for those subs. What do you mean when you say you have a lot of other subs to fit? I hope you aren't mixing subs, and if you are, that's #1 on the list of Dont's in audio.

Well, i have some audiobahn 12s to go in... could i cut and have that box fit both the audiobahns and jensens? i have no idea what model the audiobahns are... and for subs i have 3 jensen 10s, 2 MTX road thunder 2s, 2 alpine 12s, 2 audiobahn 12s, and newly aqquired, 2 MTX 10" 4500s.. i planned on using all or most of these subs... maybe it would be better to just put the audiobahns in the box for the jensens.. holes can be cut to fit 12s.. dunno what the audiobahns need for SQ. FT. though as im not sure what model they are...
