need help !!! .... locked head unit !!!
I install my new head unit but .... I can t use it ... what I have to do ???
it's a z24 cavy radio ... with cassete and cd ...
a stock head unit ... RDS ...
thers a code on it on the back try that or unhook batt. wait 1 min hook back up
If it's RDS then it must be unlocked by a dealer through your diagnostics port..... there is no way around it.... the radio locks itself since there is data shared between your cars BCM and the radio.. if the vin's do not match the radio locks... also I'm hoping this vehicle is 2000 or newer...
yep then you need to take it into the dealer... they might charge you a re-programing fee that varies from 20-100... but some dealers do it for free... all they have to do is hook up their tech 2 handheld computer and run a series of programing codes through it until they find the one that works... You will need the VIN of the vehicle that the radio was taken out of as well
Actually, you need the RPO code off the radio. Then you pick it out of the list on the Tech 2 diagnostic tool.
I've never needed the VIN, it's not like you have to enter it somewhere.

The dealership I went to used the vin of the vehicle mine came out of to get the RPO code off their system they ended up with 5 codes they could have used....
I didn't think of that... that's actually a good idea, but only if it results in the right RPO code for the radio. Mind you, you could just read it off the deck sticker before you put it in the car - then there's no confusion at all. Or read it off the RPO code sticker on the car you got it from.

ahh didn't know that.... mine came out of a 05 grand am.. .so it seemed to be the best idea to have the vin... I think the guy pulled 5-6 codes for the radio then 4 for the radio that was initially in... got lucky and the first one worked haha
