I currently have 2 12" xplode's in a sealed box with a 2k volfenhag running them...any suggestions on either making it hit harder or moving to 15's?
sony + volfenhag is your problem. Upgrade to something QUALITY.
2010 Subaru Impreza WRX Limited
1999 Cavalier Z24 Supercharged
1999 Grand AM SE (Beater Car)
1997 GMC Sierra
2007 Honda CBR 600RR
2005 Honda TRX450R
what do u recommend then? cuz for the past year nothing has gone wrong with either.
nothing has to malfunction for them to be of poor quality. the simple fact that you mentioned 15s suggests that you arent happy with what you have. you dont need 15 inch woofers to make bass, the right 12s, or even single 12 powered by a good amp will work wonders. check out www.edesignaudio.com .. or even www.woofersetc.com just to see whats available.
what ever you get go ported! www.subwoofertools.com
yea, if you want harder hits, get a ported box that's got the specs your subs like. And I do have to say that sonys last, but they generally suck for quality and spl. Go grab some kickers, alpines or something well known and read up about it. You can even get some decent combo packages at woofersetc.com with an amp and a sub.
As far as the amp thing goes, you're looking for something around a dollar a watt. Now don't buy an overpriced piece of crap amp, but make sure it's a top brand, alpine, kicker...etc. And don't listen to the 'MAX' power rating, that's a load of crap, allways compare the RMS ratings.
But yea, you should be able to slam with some good 12" subs paired to a good amp. Just grab a sub that's made for spl and a ported box.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me directly.
You can have a pretty nice dual 15" and 1200 watt Mono block amp(really does more like 1400-1600 watts RMS) for around $625 shipped.

ummm no..... i mean, if the guy is looking for a sub that will get loud and sound good but would prefer to just be loud, then yeah, get a sub that will perform its best in a ported enclosure. some subs are just built to do better in a sealed enclosure. you cant simply say that no matter what sub, a ported enclosure will do this or that, and blah blah blah. all subs are built different and will perform differently. god i hate generalized myths and bs.... "what ever you get, go ported!" grow up and shut up and dont try and give advice if you dont know the subject you are talking about...
WITH THAT SAID.
to the OP:
1. what is your budget for everything?
2. wha all do you consider "everything" to be?
3. what kind of sound are you shooting for?
4. go to diymobileaudio.com and caraudioforum.com and read stickies. (some sexy hot super awesome guy has a sticky in the subwoofer forum on caraudioforum.com that would help you ask your question better
)

well with my setup that i have right now im pushing about 140 dbs at the most. Im not looking for super sound quality or anything, just something that can shatter the windows at the comp. This isnt a daily driver car, its parked till sound comps come up.
You're doing sound comps with 2 xplodes and a volfenhag amp?
^^^ Hahahaha no @!#$ eh. Lmao. Shatter windows, good luck. I've seen maybe two video's where people have broken the windshield, and let me tell you, you've got a long way to go.

I'm going to have to disagree. These days power is cheap. Look at what Lindeman said. An amp which is supposedly underrated at 1200 watts RMS for $625. That's like fifty cents a watt, and from what I hear ED is great stuff. I have a Soundstream PCA2000 rated at 2000wrms, it's a solid amp, and was about $500 Canadian when all was said and done. That's 25 cents a watt. Dollar a watt, please
.
And to the OP, listen to JL...He knows what he's talking about. One of the few on here that do. (No offense to anyone else, just there's a lot of bad info I see...)

LOL
without other factors, SPL will not shatter a vehicles glass no matter what. it has been said and proven time and time again. when windows have cracked or broken in some way, it had other things like a crack already there, rock chip, shlt like that. you will not SHATTER any glass with any stereo setup.
AND, i highly doubt you are doing 140db on a TL legal with that flea market crap you are running... you want to get stupid loud with no reguard for sound quality? Kicker L7s in a high tuned ported box, as big as you can fit (i dont mean just build a big box, i mean get big subs, you should be able to fit a pair of 15s), and build the box accordingly.... seriously you are being too vague here. go to the damn sticky i told you about on caraudioforum.com then come back and answer all the things i ask in the beginning of it.

you can ask the guys who have broken windshields. its not the bass its usually the windshield braces breaking and allowing the windshield to flex and wave. good luck buddy lolo
thanks Nate. Leave it to you to find a short way to say what took me a paragraph.... GOSH!

NO....the $625 cost is for two 15" drivers and the amplifier.
The nine.1 sells for $365 and will put out 1400 watts easy on a 13.8volt electrical system.

Although in all technicality, didn't the mythbusters sub blow out the windows? It was as some ridiculous frequency though, like 17 Hz? Can't find the video, looks like it was taken down for some reason.
they did everything they could to build a gigantic, strictly mechanical "sub" and then sealed the car up to see where it blew out first. not the same as actual car audio.
and, Nate, I'm sure you have seen some of my blow up episodes in this forum and know that I need all the entertainment and enjoyment I can get

Yeah I know it's not even close to an electronic sub, just thought I'd point it out.
and one other thing to add to the mythbusters sub... it blew the sunroof seal, did not break a single piece of glass.

Sorry about that Alex, I wasn't really reading too deep into what you said, just trying to give examples of how a dollar per watt isn't a good way to judge quality. I guess that pushes the point even further as the amp is less money than I thought. 25 cents a watt as well. Again, sorry about that.
