Bass tickles my ears. spl question... - Audio & Electronics Forum

Hey - I finally got my 160v.2's working correctly. Theyre in a sealed enclosure right behind to drivers seat. 1.6 c/f.
I sealed off the trunk and all the open air in the back that I could so far.
Now when I crank on it, the bass gets loud enough to tickle my ears. This has never happened before to me in any car. It gets down in my throat and hits in my chest.
I love it!
My question is, Is it a frequency thing? or is it a high(ish) spl thing? Is there an approximate spl for when that starts happening?
I really dont know anything about db or spl competitions or anything this is why im asking. I just got done doing some work on the car and im giddy at how loud it got from just sealing up the cabin.
thanks for any information! I know that Id have to get it tested to know what it hits for sure, but id like to know if it might be high, if anyone can help that would be sweet.
thanks!
use a test disc, and play different freq's. Then you'll know which freq it is that tickles, lol

i personally like it when you can't breathe or see when the bass is playing....but thats just me.
With me, it's usually the higher frequencies that do it, not the loudest.
I don't consider things "loud" until you have trouble breathing and your eyes can't focus on anything.

i love it to. but my bass tickels my right ear and hurts my left
..... but i still love it
Yeah, when it feels like i'm sitting on your chest and throat, it's loud.
I have had inner ear problems since infancy, so I don't get to enjoy the tickle, I get plugged, popping ears
Haha, good to hear. I have bad ears, have since I was really young, so things arent as loud to me as other people.
hearing you guys saying that its loud makes me proud of my work, as most of you that I read from either have a vast knowledge or have a killer setup of your own.
I just need to get a bigger amp. It seems like its lower frequencies that do it for me, the chest and throat thing.
I have a JL 500/1 running my 15"s right now, and its nowhere near enough I think.
Id like to get an amp that can run at about 1200RMS. Only thing is, I have 2 Dual 2ohm subs, so I need to get an amp that is 1200RMS at 2OHMS or can get down and dirty at .5 ohms.
i was going to get a JL 1000/1, because Ive had best luck with JL amps, but ill take any good suggestions....so...Any suggestions?
thanks!
the ma audio amps i run does 1800 rms @ 1/2 ohm
I looked at those a long time ago and someone said that they were mainly for bass drags and such, but I dont think he knew what he was talking about. Care to enlighten? This JL amp I have is the cleanest power Ive heard in a car (havent heard that much, no) But it hits highs and gets dirty low...
MA = Compare?
any info is appreciated! thanks!

^^ is the orion THAT much better that its about $500 more then the MA amp? (ive seen it averaging $800) I know the orion amp is a bit more powerful, but I wont be using that much power anyways. Would there be a difference in sq between the amps?

800?? maybe when it first came out, lol. You can find them for around 300-400 used now. I just bought one for $280

If you could track down the 2500 for a good price, go for it.
^^ Im already about 1/3 the way there, Im hard of hearing as it is. I dont keep it that loud for an extended period of time or anything, it usually hurts too much.
Im out of it right now anyways, Ive got it all torn apart for fiberglassing, and I was using my stock headunit (monsoon system -- I just liked that it was a factory look) But last nite I roasted the monsoon amp, So im just going to get a new deck, and a 4 channel amp and some crossovers.
Keep some earplugs in your car, thats what I usually do.

^^haha not a bad idea. Id think I was a bit over the edge if I had a friend get in the car, turn on the stereo and I stopped them and made them put in ear plugs, then JUST before they asked, id say "... trust me".
haha, I WISH it was that loud!
It honestly isnt a bad idea,
we have earplugs and earmuffs in our demo vehicle.

That tickle is you going deaf... you can't listen to bass that long and not get perm hearing damage. Short periods are ok, but if you're getting PAIN... you'll regret it later when you can't listen at all. I'd suggest you turn it back just a notch to where you can only feel the base on the outside of your body and not on the inside
then just dial up a notch for special occasions.
^Tis what I usually do, I find that since I build a stereo that I cant handle, I don't turn it up so much anymore. Its probably the loudest around here that Ive heard (not saying much), and I have no reason to prove myself...
Honestly I don't even have to turn it up to be impressive anymore, people take one look where my back seat was and are like, "oh wow, thats gotta be loud..."
haha I love it!
