Alrighty...
I have a 97 Cavalier and out of the blue, it's been doing this start then stalling business for the past month. I tried the re-learn procedure, and it works, but only temporarily. A few days later, sometimes even a day later, the car goes back to starting then immediately shutting off.
I've searched, searched, and searched, only to find myself with the same knowledge I had a few weeks ago. Doing the re-learn and everything should be fine. Well, it isn't
Is there any way possible to bypass this f'n passlock system so the car will stop doing this? Re-programmed? Something? I have yet to find a straight answer. I don't have an alarm system/remote start/ or any of that.
HELP!
I even ended up finding this
****if you want to permanently disable the passlock, you will have to get the car started. while it is running, cut the yellow wire that comes from the "passlock sensor" on the key cylinder. Now turn the car off., then turn the key from OFF to RUN 13 annoying times. after the 13th time, turn off, then start. the theft light will be on permanently so if you don't like that, you'll have to pop the led that lights it.
after doing this, have a good alarm. passlock will no longer "protect" your car.****
I hope I don't sound gullible or desperate, but does this actually work? Because it sounds like gibberish...
nope, doesn't work. passlock uses resistance that your key gives out.
Alrighty, so do I need a new set of keys? no?
Could be a bad passlock module or ignition switch. New key isn't going to fix it. Check and make sure everything is secure with the passlock stuff, that nothing is cut or anything.
The most common cause of this is Passlock sensor failure. If this is the problem, you need a new lock cylinder.
Now, i'm finally getting somewhere. I don't think i've seen in any thread that i've searched through that i'd need a new lock cylinder. Any idea on what this would cost?
ok i switched gauges and got the passlock thingy (techincal term) from die and my car won't stay running it just starts and then dies and i hooked it up the way it was directed in the instructions and doesn't work? any ideas?
Read the FAQ on how to do a Passlock re-learn
WS, if your key is work excessively... a new one might do the trick. GM dealers can cut new ones from your VIN for a reasonable price ($2 or so for me)
dear w.s. ,
ok heres the thing with passlock... there is no way of disabaling the thing... as far as replacing the ignition lock clyninder it is an easy fix... granted the part is not cheap throutgh a dealer but it's cheaper than having them do the work they charge like 400.00 or more to do it at the dealer .. if you look around the net your could proably find the lock cylinder cheaper... to replace it all you need to do is take the collar off of you steering colum then put the key in the cylinder turn it to run but dont start the car .. the looking at the bottom of your colum you should see like a liitle sivler lock tab push it in with a flathead screwdriver and slide the clynder out ant piut the new onw back in if ya have any questions futher dont hesitae to give me a call..

sorry no sig yet ...
If none of that works, get a remote start and have a shop put in the passlock bypass. That should do it.
start car - cut wire.. none of that 13 times BS.. simple as start car and cut the wire.. light will stay on but it will be bypassed i did it for remote start
yea my 97 has the same problem i will start it then about a block down the road it will just turn off! however it starts right back up after that. is this the same thing or is it completely different?
