Recovering Headliner
Thursday, May 31, 2007 9:40 PM
I have a bunch of black sub box carpet that i want to use to recover my headliner with, but don't know if this is possible. Do I pull the old carpet off the current headliner and use a spray on adhesive or something? Any direction would be apprecaited

Thanks

best way is to cover over the old fabric. i prefer to use contact cement. paint on each surface and let sit until tacky, then apply together, and wrap the edged using hot glue

don't use material that is too heavy or it will come down after awhile. take out the headliner, there are some push pins holding it up. plus you have to take off the pillar trim, and dome light. i left my old material on the headliner and put the new stuff over top the old. i used 3m super adhesive spray. spray 2-3 coats on the headliner and put the new material on. then trim off excess with razor blade.

Do you think 3M spray adhesive will be strong enough? Remeber, I'm using black sub box fabric.

TIA

how is this Audio & Electronics?

anyways don't use the sub box fabric, it's going to be way to heavy. Go to a craft store or even wallyworld and get a similar fabric that is much thinner. 3M, fabric or the contact cement will work fine.

Most people just go over top of the existing liner.

i wouldnt suggest it. ive used it on vinyl, suede, monks robe, and a few other fabrics, and i only had luck with the suede holding good. with that heavy of a material i highly doubt it will hold. plus its soo expensive for what you get. contact cement is cheaper and i can almost guarantee it will hold

just my experiences

I thought there was a website with instructions on how to remove interior panels, recover panels etc somewhere? You might want to do a search in the interior section (it might even be stickied?), but I do remember seeing a whole DIY webpage on interior painting, recovering etc mentioned somewhere on the org.
