I've got an Infinity amp powering my two 12" sony subs, and I need to replace it. I also have Infinity component speakers powered by an Alpine 40watt x 4 @ 4 ohms rms amp. Since i'm messing with the stereo anyway, I'm really tempted just to go all Alpine and was wondering if there is much of a quality difference between Alpine and Infinity speakers (6x9's and the ones in the front doors), before I go to all the work to replace them. I'm also really tempted to replace the sub's with alpines too (either way I'm getting an Alpine amp). Obviously Alpine subs are way better than sony, I'm just wondering how the'll work in my 3 chamber bandpass (heavy duty thick wood box), or if most Alpine subs need sealed boxes or not. (I wan't to use my box), I've already got and Alpine deck.. Any opinions or knowledge would be awsome, since my only other source is the dealer.
Me personally think infinity are too harsh on the High end and lack in the mid to bass region.
Ive used infinity everything. I agree that they can be harsh on the high end. They didnt have much mid-bass untill i soundproofed the doors and the trunk and the deck (before I started my build)
I would go alpine over infinity for the subs if you want them to be louder and lower, the infinity subs that I used to have had great sq, just didnt hit the low lows like my type-r's did.
I dont know the price difference between the two, but Id say that since youre getting an Alpine amp, and have an alpine deck. to go with Alpine stuff.
I have never heard alpines speakers but I do love my infinitys. My friend has boston acoustics and those sound really really good as well, just figured you might want to check those out too, maybe do a little sound/price comparing.
In an infinite baffle setup (doors), I've found the Infinities sound better. But for kickpods, the frequency response changes and Aplines sound much better.
This is Perfect Vs. Type-X

thats quite a contradictory statement... i realy dont think you have a full understanding of what a sub with great sq is supposed to sound like if you say they had great sq WITHOUT hitting the low nots that well..... either that or "hitting the low notes" to you means overpowering bass... uhg...
as for the topic at hand, listening to speakers is the best way to chose. just like sndsgood said, go listen. my ears might say that one set sounds phenomenal, but another set of ears might hate them. personal preference plays a huge role in this decision... more so than what brand makes them. AND another thing... its not as simple as what brand... each brand has different lines that will have different sounds. you gotta find your budget, listen to some speakers and see what appeals to your taste. when you go out to shops to listen, bring a cd or 2 of some different types of music that you would be playing most often also.
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

It's all a personal preference bro, get whatever you like. If you like alpine, then buy it.

I agree with the personal preferance thing, I didn't really think of that. I just wish I could hear what Alpines sound like in a car setup through a crossover like I have so I can make a real comparison. As far a the Infinity's being "harsh" on the high end. Thats kinda why I bought them, I wan't the hear the very high pitch treble, over the subs. Plus, I don't have my components putting out any bass. I've got the crossovers set so the subs take over at that point. My subs in the box I have create a wide range of bass, so maybe I'll just replace the amp.
Okay, I gotta put this out there.
If you just want speakers that will be able to play as loud as your subs, just get some moderately priced speakers and leave it at that.
The only reason you would want GOOD front components is if you wanted to benefit from the Sound Quality increase you would get. If you're playing bass loud enough, and to a high enough frequency that they are overpowering (and undoubtably distorting) your mid to high range sound, it would not be worth the money to buy high-end speakers.
well i have infinity components powered by an infinity amp in my front doors and i love it. The highs sound great and once i get my sub it will sound a lot better. Besides components aren't meant for bass...they are meant for mids and highs besides i have the references and they scream at about 90 watts. As stated above its all preference im gonna get another set of components for the back and one alpine type r for bass with a 800wat @ 2 ohms rms amp.....i used MDF wood to mount the front speakers and im going to do the same for the rears plus i plan on some sound deadening...
Yea, thats all I use my Infinity components for. If I turn off the subs, there's no bass at all, they cut off near the lower mid-range end, and I have my subs set to take over there (the transistion is unoticable, I've used testing cd's to make sure). I was just wondering if some good Alpines would serve that purpose better. I tend to like clarity over anything else. Sure I love loud hard hitting bass, I just wan't to hear the highs as clearly as possible too. Doesn't anyone else have there system set up so where the subs are puttin out really strong crisp bass, but you can still hear every high pitch note comming out of your components. I't nice to hear EVERY note high and low with the music cranked.

I wasnt taking the full definition of "sq" I guess then. What I meant to say was, the alpine subs could hit lower notes than the infinifty subs. However, for everything else (other than low-low notes) the infinity speakers were better sounding than the alpine ones.
Im no guru, just what I heard from the system.
^^Weebel, Id say go with personal prefrence, however; I have to throw elemental designs in the mix here as a suggestion, I just got a set of 6000s v.2 speakers. To me they sound better than the infinity 6x9's that I had, however it might be apples to oranges, as the eD speakers I got are 6.5" and theyre in a different location. Theyre pretty amazing sounding for the price. Just thought Id throw that out there.
i have 2 10" type Rs powered by an alpine v12 amp and its a great set up. other than lacking component speakers over stock, its perfect.
Old thread, I know, but had to add to bring it back since I've got something to add to it.
Anyway, infinity vs alpine... I've only owned infinity coaxials and they were refference (the bottom of the lineup) speakers. Anything comming from the tweaters are REALLY harsh. It's almost like all of the 'ssss' and hiss sounds from the speech and hi-hats in the song were amplified and are extreemly pronounced. I originally intended to grab infinities for all 4 corners of my car, but I do have to say I'm going alpine type R now from what I've heard. The only wierd part is that I sound tested these speakers at best buy (they have the type-R and the infinity reff)And I cannot detect the exagerated HI's from the infinities that I heard in my car. But none-the-less, the type-R's sounded way superior to the infinities, and imo sounded a bit louder with the same settings. Just my 2 cents anyway.
one thing to take into consideration when you are listening to speakers, is the amount of power they are getting and the location. power wise when surveys are done with two identical pairs of speakers the majority of listeners will pick the speakers that are playing louder, even if they are the same speakers with the same amps powering them and the same material, the ear just picks the louder one as being better. so try to listen to music at as close to the same volume as you can. also some speakers are designed for on-axis listening (speakers pointed towards the listener) and some are designed for off-axis listening(speakers designed to sound best when not pointed directly at you) so if you are standing in front of a pair of off-axis speakers chances are the sound will be more harsh and not sound as good same goes for on-axis. if your listening to them and not directly in front of them chances are the sound may be dull and lifeless. and chances are good if you ask the salesmen wether they are on or off axis he will most likely look at you with a dumb look and go " no these are infinities(or sony or alpine or whatever) so do your homework and check out the manufactueres info online before you go because chances are really good the salemen wont know. another thing, is to take in your own reference c.d. some people like to take in music they listen to but i feel if a system is playing accurately its goint to play mozart just as accuratly as it will play mettalica. so i take something with good dynamics, and that is a clean recording. one of my favorites is dire straights, money for nothing, or bare naked ladies gordon cd's they are very well produced cd's

but i have not disliked either my alpine or infinity speakers
Crap I thought this thread was long gone.
I've decided to leave my components the way they are, since I like the way they sound and it's a pain to replace them.
I still need to replace my amp powering my subs since it's not powerfull enough. It's a profile series infinity amp. The peak power rating is correct for the speakers but the rms rating is around half of what I need (didn't notice when the guy at best buy sold it too me), now the amp goes into protect mode with the subs turned up. When I replace it, i'm definatly going with an alpine amp. My 2 12" Sony's sound pretty good, but I'm fighting the temptation to replace them with some good alpine 12's. It will all depend on how much spare cash I have when I do it. I'll probably just put a 400x2 or 450x2 watt rms amp in the trunk, sell the infinity, and call it a day.
I was gonna get alpine or infinity, then i got mxt's but yeaaaa follow ur heart bro
