OEM RDS Compatability?

Hi all,

My brother and I both have '02 Cavs - his being a nicely equipped LS coupe, mine being a lowly base sedan.

His has the '8'-speaker 'premium' stereo system, where mine is just the '6' - but I have the CD/Cassette RDS deck where he only has a single-disc CD w/out RDS.

As he has an iPod, I'd like to get him a OEM head unit where he can plug it in (I use my HiMD player via the cassette adaptor), but I two questions before I try this as a grad present for him:

1. Will the CD/Cassette RDS stereo work WITH the stock GM "8-speaker" system?
2. Will a CD/Cassette RDS stereo pulled from a Silverado or Impala work in the Cavalier (in terms of existing connectors?)
3. Will a dealer 'reflash' (necessary, I know) adress both of these issues?

Thanks!

1 - yes, dealer can reflash it
2 - no, they put different models in those vehicles
3 - see above. You'd be better off to buy an aftermarket stereo to put in.

Thanks, but no to the aftermarket. I can just get an OEM CD/tape deck for around $30 and allow him to listen to CD and iPod, whereas I'd have to do at least $70 to properly wire the aftermarket deck in.

What was so different about the radios in the same years of Silverados? Looked to be the same radio overall...

Someone already tried to exchange the radio from a silverado - the radio builds are different, and couldn't be coded to work for our cars - they look for a vin #.
