Buildiing Type R box, what do you think ?
Monday, April 30, 2007 1:29 AM
Ok, im building a box for my alpine Type R, 1242D ( dual 4 ohm ) its gonna get a 2 ohm load off an MRD-605 wired parrellel. So it should have plenty of power, but it barely moves and really just doesnt sound that good, so im thinking the box its in is WAY to small. So I was searching through the caraudio.com forums and saw a design for a single 12" Type R box design for 3 cubes tuned to 30 - 32 hz. I was wondering what you guys thought about it, or if I should tweak it some. The reason I wanna use this is beacuase I have all the measurements and would just have to cut the wood and assemble the box, and not buy a custom box, plus I have a full sheet of MDF for my W7 box I built a while back.

Here is the design, like I said let me know what some of the gurus think, because if that is too big that it wont be musical maybe someone could come up with something else for me.

my buddy just got a 12" W7 after I had one and then I had 2 8" W7s, and now that he has one he thinks that me going to a type R was a COMPLETE step backwards, but I dont think thats right and I have heard good things about them, so I want to tune it right and make it all sound pretty good together to show him that its all about the install and hopefully get close to what I had before. Thanks a lot

It looks good Karnage but I really dont like the way that port looks. It looks like the violet peice would be right on the magnet. Ill see if I can find my ProBox 5.0 and get you another cut sheet if you want. Just let me know the specs on how you want it.

***Off Topic**** Steven sorry I havent had a chance to reply to you on AIM been busy but I did get your pacakge did you get the one I sent you?*****

Doesn't the type R only ask for like 1cu ft. I also believe that the type R is meant to be sealed.

As far as specs go, im up for suggestions, I listen to Rock and Rap and like I said I am running a MRD-M605 so I dont expect to hit any crazy numbers, just know the box I have is WAY too small and it has to be why it doesnt get loud without soundnt terrible.

I know alpine suggests something like 1.5 cubes, but that just seems really small to me, so I thought I should do something bigger, tuned low since I would need it to be very musical and not miss out on any notes, and I need it for Rock and Rap, I know that my current box does sound pretty good but wont get loud, so I looked at boxes for them and they are all a lot bigger.

It just doesnt seem like you feel the bass very much, its punchy, but it isnt very deep. So any help on that would be appriciated, and it looks as if you got a copy of the program steve, lol.

Also, if someone has a better box design and can send me a jpeg wi\th the dimensions and stuff on it, that would be helpful, since I cant eem to figure out port size and stuff like that, that is the main reason Im going with the box I linked to, because I dont know how to do anything but cut wood and put it together lol.

the people that know that sub the best are alpine, give them a call and talk to their tech department they should be able to give you exactly what you want.

I'm telling you, that box is fine.

and the type r doesn't have a 14"+ mounting depth, so it's not going to hit anything, lol.

We've been running ours for quite awhile in this exact box, on a JBL 600.1 and it sounded fine, and got loud for what it is.

No and no...

The guys over on that forum have hit some insane numbers with the Type R. Look up a few more designs if you want, but lately I have seen alot of people having the best luck in a 2.5cube box....however 3 should be fine..

well I will have to get another sheet of MDF when im at lowes and go with this setup, I hope thats why the bass isnt very deep, it seems very shallow and I can push on the cone as it hits and it wont even move my fingers. Its just not hitting hard, and the amp is set properly, so im hoping my box with bring the beast to life lol. At least sound better than the 12" MtX 4500 at work

Not to jack this thread, but what tuning do you recommend with the 2.5?? i Currently have a 3 inch tube, if that makes a difference. BTW the type R hits hard in the 2.5, but tuning makes all the difference.

Its up to you. Alot of people run 30-32hz. Get the low end notes. If you just want it loud, tune it near 35hz..

Im in the process of putting mine in a 5 cube at 32hz box right now for my commuter car...
