Rear 6x9 openings in the sheetmetal..............

Anyone ever notice that they SUCK!

5years ago I mounted some Kenwood 6x9' s in my 02. After that I had 4 JL 6x9's glassed in the rear deck and now I have 4 JL 6.5 components glassed in the rear deck. So it has been awhile since I've had a set of speakers in the STOCK location in a 3rd Gen cavalier.

Today I went to installl my JL VR6x9's in my 03, WHAT THE HELL was GM thinking? My 03 came with XM, well becase of that the XM tuner box is mounter next to the passenger side 6x9. To do that GM engineered a Different piece of metal than my 02 back there. The 6x9 is about 2.5inches from the trunk arm that is mounted to the rear deck. The drivers side is about 4-5inches away. So needless to say the speakers are NOT evenly spaced back there.

Now this it the 1st set of VR's I've owned, the MAGNET BARELY fits in the cutout for the stock speaker. So I mounted them from under the rear deck. Now if I cut out the holes for the grilles they will not be evenly spaced.

I really don't care, just made me think why the hell would they do that?

I only have a set of infinity kappas powered by the monsoon amp.. first I had to make the holes bigger for the speakers. Then after i got them installed, they rattled the hell out of the whole deck.

Its all dynamatted now, but it still flexes a lot when the speakers hit.

Its a different problem than youre having, but I agree, the deck isnt designed well

I took out my factory speakers a couple months back and dynamated the opening with 2 layers. When I did that I did not notice how off the holes were.

matt you could have just used the spacers that came with the speakers. I had the kappa 6x9's (693.7i) fit perfect with the included spacers

I do have the spacers, they didnt want to fit, I had to open them about 3/16" on each side. and I used longer screws to secure the whole thing onto the deck so the speakers wouldnt move... at all...

my first question is why????? rear speakers for the lose.

all joking aside....

The rear decks do suck...My favorite method of rear deckness is deaden the lower 1/2. Then apply resin, rope and chunks of mat to the top side. This will stiffen the @!#$ out of it and them apply alot of foam to the top side before placing the rear deck cover back on.

Makes it solid as can be.
