Power Wire
Monday, March 26, 2007 5:42 PM
I am currently running 4 gauge power wire to my single amp. I plan on running 3 amps in the future so I am asking, is 4 gauge enough to power 3 amps and my cap? Because it has to break out so many times.

MA Audio is low end at best... amps can be had that are far better quality and actualy put out rated power... this is just a heads up, not trying to bash on anything you have or may have... but look around... what are you powering with these amps?

Couldnt he go with a 0/1GA wire to a fused distribution block that splits to 4 4GA wires? Thats what I am looking to do when i upgrade this summer.

Also I was wanting to break out to 4 ga. for the amps so I like the PDK1 thing but what kind of dist. blocks does it come with? I need to split the main 4 ways.

Their HK series isn't low end

i have 0/1 in my car... and a stinger 3 4gauge output distro block running my 3 mtx amps and it works just great.

The pkd1 has 4 4 gauge outputs and they come with adapters for 8 gauge. and theres a 1/0 output with an adapter for 4ga. So 5 4 gauge out total

ok i was looking on my amps today and the power and ground ports seem kinda small. i dunno if they will hold a 4 gauge i'll have to look more but if they don't what do i do? i know dropping from 0 right down to 8 would be very dumb.

So you're running a total of 1,600 watts, you're gonna want that kicker pkd1 kit. Each distro block (the pack comes with 2, one for ground and the other for hot) has 1 input for a 1/0 gauge and 4 outs for 4 gauge or as said, the adapter for 8 gauge. It's not stuipd to run a 1/0 gauge into a 8 gauge unless you're running an amp that is fully utilizing the 1/0 gauge main line, which you're gonna need more than that 800 watt to do that. So run the 1/0 cable from the battery to your distro block, then run the 4 gauge to each of your amps (It should be 4 gauge on each input since 4 gauge is safest for 400+, but 400 is kind of the cut-off point, so it COULD be 8 gauge, it's just unlikely if the company that made your amp is smart). You can allways run more wire after you hook everything up and see what you really need, then take a trip down to your local store that sells shielded 4-8 gauge wire. It doesn't really require more than that.

why would it be dumb going from 0 to 8. if 8 will power your amp fine then there is nothing dumb about it. people forget that how many amps a wire can hold is dependant on the length of the wire. if your running a very short run (couple feet from distro block to amp) then the wire doesnt need to be near as big as the wire that comes from the battery up front that is 15-20 feet long.

Jeff, their HK amps are ALRIGHT, not low end like 99% of their products, but IMO their HK4000D is the ONLY amp that I would say is leaps and bounds above their other crap

i found my cable chart and just as an example.

8 gauge wire 4' or less in length can handle up to 125 amp.

that same 8 gauge wire 15' or so can handle only 65 amps.

I was letting my cousin borrow my pkd1 and I diddent want to cut anything so I used 8 gauge to his. 2 ma audio suppose to be 800 watt amps and when i went to take it out a week later and the 8 gauge was burnt on the ends. The fuse rating on the amp is 50 amps. IDK

ok now i know this is going to sound really stupid but right now i'm just having a brain fart, what are the measurements for a 2 cubic foot box? is it 2 x 2 x 2? just had a long day and can't think straight right now.

volume = L x W x H

2 x 2 x 2 = 8

1.25 x 1.25 x 1.25 = 1.95

1 x 2 x 1 = 2

Take your pick, there's many variations on box sizes that will equal 2 cubic feet

if the burning was on the ends at the connection points its likely do to a loose connection. if the connection isnt solid it can heat up and start to burn if it gets hot enough.
