ID MAX vs. Type X?
Sunday, March 25, 2007 2:32 PM
For any of you who have heard (or had) both, which sounds better? The emphasis is on SQ not SPL for me. To be more specific on the subs I'm talking about, they are the ID MAXv3 12D4 & the Type X 12 (dual 4's) & I'm only using one sub. I have all Alpine amps (MRD1005 for sub) thus the only reason for considering the Type X. I've heard so many good things about Image Dynamics subs, but not much oppertunity to listen to them. What's your opinion?

the ID max is an amazing woofer. if SQ is all you are after why not just the idqs?

personally i think you should go with a JL Audio W6v2 12. Thats an amazing speaker. Won best sub of 2006 from several testers

I suppose I should clarify, I do want the ability to play loud and clear, but it's more important to me to have high sound quality (musical sub bass)at normal listening levels. I should also note that this will be a full 5.1 channel system so sub has to be able to do everything well.

well u can tone down the amps to the sub. but by far JL Audio i think is your best solution. they are a little high but well worth the $. i have 2 W6v2 12's in my car. and sometimes i just feel like turning the bass down and listening to some blues and never the less they still sound GREAT!

Dude STFU JL audio is not the answer for everyone. just the uneducated. since you named that criteria i would take the Max. I wasn't a big fan of the type X i heard.

IDQ > w6 any day of the week. Type X has some problems with spiders and cones separating. Acutally, if you can find a flat piston speaker that's the way to go if you're doing sq.

ok... W6 is an AMAZING SQ driver... that is for sure... but honestly, he wasn't asking about one, and to the guy who recomended it.. you sound like one of those uneducated kids who recomends things based on hype, advertising, customer reviews and word of mouth,.... not actual experience... you might be running a pair of W6's but have you ever heard an ID MAX? or a Type-X? you know... the subs he was actualy asking about?!

Nate, I would have hoped more out of you than to say that JL Audio is only for the uneducated... sure there are going to be lower or similar cost alternatives to any given JL product... but the quality IS there, the reliability IS there, and the amazing sound quality IS there..... so JL being just for the uneducated? I would almost say that is 180 degrees from the truth.. again, I would have expected more from you.

In all honesty, the ID MAX has almost NO flaws... other than price... when it comes to a down right outstanding performer among any driver you will ever look into for SQ. It has the ability to get plenty loud and still sound spot on at any volume you put it at. I would vote for that, but I will also be the person to say that I don't recomend things I haven't had experience with, and try not to knock things I haven't had experience with either. And with that said, I haven't had very much experience with the Type X.... not enough to say one would be better than the other.

dustin its not that Jl doesnt make a quality product. i'll never say that. i just get sick of dude get rid of those DD's you have and get some w7s or RE Jl will kill those comments. Again here is another one. Most of the time They are ran by individuals who dont know any better and bought it for the name. Thats where the uneducated comes in.

I dunno about that. We may have to agree to disagree.
Back in the mid to late 90s when I was competing in SQ, I regularly outscored guys running IDQs with my W6s. It's all in the install
But we're talking old-school W6s and IDQs. No experience with anything newer, as I went over to the dark side when my car was gutted by thieves in 2000.

But IMO the W6 is the only subwoofer JL makes that is worth the asking price.

alright Jeff, thanks for that piece of info and i hope "fanboy" was referring to the random "get a W6" guy, and not me. because if you told me I had never heard or heard of anything ID has to offer, I would promply e-kick your ass LOL.

And I do kind of have to agree with the price point that Derek had brough up about the W6 being the only driver they make worth the over the top asking price... because it is, in fact, a SQ monster. hands down... HOWEVER I would also argue that for a good starter sub at a good starting price, the W0's were quite a good little contender.

The enclosure will make the ultimate difference here. the IDMax will gives fantastic performance in a sealed enclosure, at reccomended power. While on the SQL side of things, the Type X will satisfy you more when placed in a Ported enclosure or a bandpass, giving you the output you crave, yet the soft silk smooth playback you are asking for.

I am going with the ID Max 12. It has nice SQ sound at lower power levels, and is really loud in a ported box with a larger amp.

I gotta say, Matt, your generalizations are quite wrong here. I don't disagree with you often, but the Type-X is a Sealed monster, the thing is amazing sealed, and I personaly wouldn't chose one if ported was my plan.
