XMOD?

Got a few questions on 24bit audio:

1. What is a 24bit DAC, and does it convert the audio from the CD to 24bit audio to be sent to the speakers.

2. Has anyone tried to hook up the new creative device called an XMOD from their MP3 player to their aux-in on their HU, and does it work?

3. (relates to question 1) What's the difference between a 24bit dac and the 24bit audio that the Crystalizer feature in creative sound cards/XMOD can create?

4. heres the link to the XMOD: http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=209&subcategory=668&product=15913

5. Would the HU do anything to the signal that it recieves from the Xmod to lessen the sound quality?

6. Thanks. lol

from what i can tell reading that page, you have to have that thing hooked up to a computer playing the mp3's through it, to do anything. i really dont see how this could be used in a car without a laptop.

car audio noob since 1984.

yea, there's another option with it, but you need a special power adaptor that would plug into it to play an mp3 player into it, but that requires a wall outlet (I can easily get a power inverter for my 12V cig plug. So that wouldn't be a problem.

DAC = digital to analog converter. Converts computer information (1's and 0's) to audio waves which you can hear, when reproduced by a speaker. The rest I'm a bit fuzzy on

to be honest the xmod doesnt look worht it. mp3 is a compressed format so its never gonna osund much better

My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again

Yea, thought about that, but the crystalizer function on my computer here (I have a PCI X-FI sound card) and there is a difference in my computer audio with it on than when it's off. The biggest thing I notice is that the bass is richer and the highs and are clearer and less cluttered with more structure to them. But I'm not sure whether the same quality would be true in a car since I'm going to be pumping out more power and than my computer is in an enclosed space. So basically if someone can answer the 24bit Digital to analog converter question I'll have my decision on whether to get it next month or not.

well basically lenko nailed the explanation. the DAC is a digital to analog convertor, but he got it backwards. a DAC converts digital to analog, and an ADC converts analog to digital.

personally, i cant see how this is going to help you in your car. most aftermarket decks already have a function to make the bass and highs more defined...

its called a LOUD button.

scrap the idea and just get a crossover built or purchase an equalizer. this will allow you to cancel overlapping frequencies from your woofers.

DAC's and ADC's have their purpose, but i cant see how any of them would have a purpose in your car.
