Help With Different Box Styles
Saturday, February 24, 2007 3:41 PM
I have a 97 cavalier and have two 15s in the trunk right now and I built the box myself with in all honesty no idea what makes a good box but I am pretty good with wood working. My box has an angle on the front (because I thought it would look cool, and it really does) but i relize I made my subs sound worst with this box. Is there standard of the shape of a sealed box to get the best sound? Also another question I have is pretty much any info on building ported boxes. Any info would be great. Thanks

Ok first of all, we need to know what kind of wuffers you have. Brand name and model will go a long way . The shape of the box really doesn't matter as long as it's the right size. Two fifteens is a tall order for a cavalier trunk, because 15's usually require a large amount of airspace to operate correctly. As far as porting goes...

To tune a ported box to a desired frequency, use the following equation:
Fb - is the desired tuning frequency of your enclosure in Hertz.
Lv - is the length of your port in inches.
R - is the inside radius of your vent tube.
Vb - is the internal volume of your enclosure in cubic inches. To convert cubic feet to cubic inches, multiply by 1728.
If you want to use multiple ports, divide your enclosure volume by the number of ports you want to use, then use the result of this calculation as your Vb in the formula below to find out how long each port should be.

LV= [(1.463 x 10^7 x R^2) / (Fb^2 x Vb)] - 1.463xR

If you want to calculate square vents, the formula below will give you the value of R to use in the formula above.
R=square root of ( A / Pi )

Copied from some site I can't remember...It looks like a lot of math, but it's really basic. There are also many calculators out there to help you design these as well. Usually, as far as tuning goes, if you want any kind of quality, high 20's to mid 30's seems to be the way to go. Remember that if you're going ported your box will usually be bigger, and you maybe find it impossible to fit the two 15's in your trunk. Heck, two 15's sealed might be impossible...or a reallllll tight fit.

you want to bump, then they will bump and hit real hard and a lot good.
