my g/f is finally letting me do her system!

well, me and my boss are finally building up my girlfriends system.

like my own, its going to be a budget driven system.

i havent snapped pics of anything yet, but here is what is going in it so far.

Purchased:

- Duval component set (5.25" woofer with seperate swival tweeters and crossover)
- 2x 6.5" subwoofer (only one purchased so far, on more on its way)

Still to purchase:

- other 6.5" subwoofer
- Roadmaster 500W max 4 channel amp with filters

The 6.5" subs dont seem like much but they have been tested now and they are an efficient little bastard. the produce something like 93.2 db @ 2.83V! the max output is only going to be around 102 db though, which is why we are going to run 2 of them off of 2 of the 4 channels of the amp.

i dont even know what brand the subs are. i bought them at a place called princess auto in canada. our best guess puts them to be a sony sub. the appear to be out of a mini system or home theater. so far im very impressed by them.

the duval components are a lower sensitivity than the sub, so even though they are small subs, they will sound nice and booming when paired up to those duvals.

so far here is the projected cost for the build:

Duval components - $50
2 x 6.5" subs - $20 ($10/sub)
roadmaster amp - $50
misc. wiring - $50
material for box - $60 (wood and carpet, etc)

so far im projecting this to be around $200 CDN.

this will definatly improve the sound in her little accent!

pics will be comming eventually.

I think you'll actually be downgrading the sound in her car. Cheap audio is cheap for a reason, and you probably won't be happy with the output.

Sorry to say, but every one of those brands are..........well.......how do i put this.........SH!T. You might as well leave it with the stock audio setup.

I think everybody here is way too hasty in judging. Yeah, 18 years ago when I first started building systems (when I was about the same age as the rest of the respondents) I too would have been bashing Whitegoose on his selections. Having built many, many systems over the years though, I have come to the realization that how a specific component is utilized & integrated with the other components of the system has a far greater impact on the final outcome than the companies logo that is stamped on the piece of hardware. I have auditioned many systems over the years (including some IASCA championship winning vehicles), and to be honest, I've listened to many reasonably priced systems that sounded far better than many of the big dollar systems.

The bottom line is don't judge a system based on it's cost or the brand of it's components. I learned this lesson when I was 18. I had my brand name systems ass kicked at a local SQ competition by a guy with Pyramid amps who actually knew how to utilize the components he had to their fullest.

I choose to reserve opinion on anybodies system until after I've heard it. I don't care what you have.

the title made me giggle

My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again

I've been doing your girlfriends 'system' for years, you're late to the party my friend

You guys can go ahead and do her "system" Im gunna play with her box

Shane...you are right to a point. A Good Builder can make a @!#$ty system sound and perform better than someone who knows nothing with top of the line components..

However...

When it comes down to it, you don't want @!#$ty equipment. You want stuff that will last. There are some components, no matter how good the builder, that will sound like @!#$...and not last very long...

I had a pyrimid purple amp hooked to my JL 10w3d4..... sounded pretty damn good (couldnt handle 2 of them though)...... to bad someone stole it, and the INS. hooked me up with a RF Punch amp....

to me the quality of the sound is still based on having the system built properly, not the brand that is stamped on the front of it. alot of these companies have all their crap built by the same manufacturer but just have a different logo stamped on the cone and a different name on the magnet.

brand image is a bunch of bull@!#$ IMHO, and bull@!#$ is just ment to baffle brains. the quality of the sound is what is heard, not the companies logo that is on the cone.

I can see its pointless to argue with you...

I'm using those speakers (They ain't subs ).

They sound amazing here, they're on a 3-way crossover and probably getting about 20 watts RMS at most each.

However, I have some in my car too. I used them to replace the 5.25" from the component set I was using. They sound like crap. So I'm thinking their RMS rating must be much lower than 60W. They are in custom door pods though, and the pods aren't finished yet so there may be some leaks, not sure if that would affect the sound the way it is...

It might also be that the impedance is changing through the frequencies differently than the 5.25" speakers, but I don't think that would make too huge of a difference. I could be wrong.

So now I have some extra speakers lying around, well at least they were only $10 a piece

Good luck with this, just don't feed them over 30WRMS or so I guess

who is arguing? i said it was my opinion that the logo on the cone doesnt make a difference.

you said you prefer a name brand unit because you feel the quality is better and they seem to last longer.

your not going to make me change my opinion, the same as im not going to change yours, so who is arguing?

I never said I prefer name brand...

You focus on the fact that the logo doesn't mean anything. I could give a @!#$ less about the logo. What Im trying to say is, although your right, there are some brands that are just pieces of @!#$, and no matter what you do to them, they either aren't going to sound good, or aren't going to last long...

there is one thing i will give you rosario,

alot of the name brand stuff you pay an arm and a leg for is really good when it comes to sensitivity and power handling and impedence.

im just saying that low end components, tested and built properly to maximize effeciency and work well together will sound better than anything (high end or not) that is just thrown together and expected to sound good.

a driver produces its best sound when it is working its most efficient. its all about maximizing what you have.

If these are the same Princess Auto speakers, they sound poor in your car for a reason. I've tested the Thiele/Small parameters of these driver's & they absolutely MUST be in a vented enclosure (approx. .35 cu/ft tuned to 55 hz, which looks close to what the volume of the enclosures in the picture look to be). They have a Qts of .25. Running them IB in the door is a poor application for them. This all comes back to the same comment above.....an inexpensive driver utilized properly can work quite well....just as an expensive driver utilized poorly can sound like garbage.

THANK YOU
Man, I've been wanting to get the TS parameters for these, but I had no way to identify brand and I don't have the equipment nor the motivation to do it through my soundcard

I'm glad its not my enclosure size because those doors were a b!tch to make.

Must have been just luck of the draw that I got the boxes right (.25cubes, tuned to 50Hz)

PM me your e-mail address & I'd be happy to send you complete T/S specs on them. They really do seem to be a reasonably good driver (I have 4 of 'em beside my test equipment downstairs waitin' to go). My best guess would be that they are overstock from Sony, likely used in a bookshelf mini-system
